I'm 16 years old and I've never had a dog before but I've had plenty of cats. I've heard poms get along with cats pretty well but Im not sure that its true. I want a pom very much so but this could be a problem.
I have a pom and she is fine with other animals. She will not play with them to much she likes to hang out with me. But when you get her next to an animal she knows well IT'S ON she will play till her head falls off. If you get a puppy it should be fine. Just remeber they get very protective so make sure you give equal love to all & you should not have a problem.
My pom tolerated the new kitten. Over time they bonded to the point that our cat would clean the dogs fur and they would try and squeeze into the same little pet bed. Just remember baby poms are very fragile, just don't let the cats beat up on the new puppy if you get one.
Do a lot of research about the breed you are thinking of owning. Poms are very good pets, however they are very clingy and thrive on human interaction. You are only 16 and will be spending a lot of time in school, what will the puppy/dog be doing during this time. You are likely becoming more sociable at this age are you going to take the dog to school activities, dates, ect. Who is going to clean up after the puppy/dog, these small animals do not housebreak easily and have months of accidents. The Pomeranian needs a lot of grooming, are you going to be able to spend the time everyday tending to it without your homework suffering. When this puppy is 2 years old and is very attached to you and you go away to college what is going to happen to this poor dog. Please think about the consequences of owning a dog, now may not be the right time to bring a new dog into your life, perhaps another cat would be better. They are more independent and can adjust more to being alone than a dog.
I don't have cats but do have two poms and a maltese. My male pom is 7 months old and he loves everybody, humans and animals alike! My girl pom is 6 months old and she's a wee bit more independent, but her and the male play constantly all day. They both try to play with our three year old maltese, sometimes he lets them but most the time he just growls them away. I think Pomeranians are an awesome breed, just make sure you have time for your new pet b/c they do love interaction with their owner.
