Well we ended up rushing Lily back into the emergency department for the vet on Sunday at 5:30pm as she started vomiting and trembling , and having a hard time breathing . Scared the you know what out of us and the vet. They took xrays and at first it looked like her uterus was infected and they were going to have to do a emergency spayed on her but they wanted to do another xray first and it showed her uterus was fine but her colon was full of air!! She also had eclampsia too. Her colon was full of air as she likes to gulp her food and because she was in pain because of the eclampsia she was taking in to much air too and trembling because of the lack of calcium. While she was in there her temp. went up to 106 degrees they had to ice her and push the fluids after a couple of hours she was doing better. They also gave her a dose of calcium and we got her home at 7am this morning. She is doing much better and at 3pm we are taking her for another calcium count to see how it is coming and we have to giver her tums for a few days and then in a few weeks get her checked again. Oh the fun and the $$$$$$ Puppies are doing great on their food .We have them on Pedigree puppy diluted with warm water and they love it. We fed them last night at 10pm and they never woke up until 7am this morning !! So no more mommy for them until they are completly weaned and Lily's milk dries up. She doesn't seem to interested in them anyway's . She goes over to their cage and looks at them but that's it so I guess I am the mom now. Oh the fun I don't think we will be breeding again or if we do the calcium will be checked before after and during the whole process. It was the whole raw diet thing that got her in this mess as she isn't a bone eater she had no way of producing the calcium her body needed so she is on the dog food for good now and after Ben finishes the food I have in the freezer he will be too. I guess we all learn from our mistakes . I will keep ya posted on how things go .Lisa
oh what a nightmare for you!! glad lily is at least feeling a little better. i have never bred my dogs. when i was younger i worked for a vet who took in strays. alot of dogs came in pregnant so i got to raise alot of puppies. i know what a nightmare it can turn into. also helping my mom raise her litter was alot of work. things aren't as easy as alot of people think they will be. i wish you the best!!!!!
Hi Lisa, Sure hope Lily is doing better today. I'm sure she is exhaused, and you and your husband also. Glad to hear the puppies are doing good and eating the regular food. Hope all goes well for you all. Take care and get some much needed rest.
Lisa&Glenn, I'm so sorry youve had so many problems with this. As I read your post, I was actually sitting here wondering if you would breed her again, given all the problems she's had. I know my newfoundland breeder won't breed dogs that have had any kind of difficulties whelping again, so she's had to spay the last 2 females that whelped. The first I told you guys about, only 2 of the 9 puppies are alive now, the second had her litter on last Thursday, and all 11 puppies are doing great this time, but Phoebe did have to have a c-section after 7 puppies were born, so they went ahead and spayed her to be on the safe side. I'm glad that the puppies did get to nurse off of Lily for a few weeks, as the colostrum and milk is so healthy for them as they build up antibodies and immunities. You will be busy, but the canned food sounds like it's filling them up pretty good! Maybe as Lily gets a bit more healthy, she can have more interaction with them as a momma dog again, so she can start teaching them manners and socialization stuff before they go to their new homes. Here's a pic of the latest pile o puppies from my newf breeder. I still don't get my puppy yet, I think they are 'backlogged' from small litters from the previous problems, but that's ok. Gives me more time ot prepare! http://www3.sympatico.ca/rdoverman/phoebe_bernard_litter_3days.jpg
minniyar those pups are adorable!!!!! i like the landseers. i am always attracted to the rarer colors oor breeds though. answer me this question : do you only get the landseers if the one of the parents is a landseer or can they come out with 2 black parents? and vice versa can two landseers have black puppies?
