I am a new owner of a wonderfull French Bulldog Otto. We had him home for 1 day when he showed signs of a cherry eye. We've been to the vet and are on meds. But it looks like surgery may be ahead. Has anyone been through this? We really like our vet but $700 to $800 seems like alot for what I hear is a simple operation. Also, what are your thoughts on Pet insurence. rebecca
heridtary it's a know problem in the flat faced breeds. My vet told us he's seen it even in show qulity dogs and it's not a sign of an unhealthy puppy. But just something that can happen with bulldogs and offten in both eyes. We are keeping our fingers crossed it's just one.
Otto-I'm trying to remember what we charge for cherry eye repair, but I can't think of it right now. Seems its about 300-500, somewhere in there. Just remember even though it seems like a simple procedure, the eye is a very delicate and difficult place to work on. I hope your baby doesn't need the surgery. I've seen many heal on their own though so keep your fingers crossed. And maybe he won't need it. :)
My female bulldog had it in one eye. It showed up while she was playing with my other dog one night. I was all worried about it but by morning it had gone back down by itself and hasn't shown up again since. I was also told that it is very common, not a sign of an unhealthy dog, and not a real big deal to treat.
I'd just shop around to see what some other veterinarians charge if you are concerned about the cost.
Our male english bulldog puppy had surgery when he was 5 months old for cherry eye. The surgery was simple, but required alot of work to keep the eye clean and dry. We also had to put in an antibotic ointment three times a day for almost a month. He completely healed in about a month and a half and I can not tell the difference. The total cost, including medicine, was $170.00. Hope that helps.
