It's really ridiculous how this post had to turn into something so negative. I am not going to defend my dogs because I honestly believe the whole point behind the negative comments are just to get people in an uproar. I spent a lot of time away from this forum because I became so fed up with all the bashing. I refuse to allow the trolls to run me off again. So BUG OFF!
just one additional comment. I think the reason it seems like attacks are on the rise is media coverage. if you go by that, the most dangerous thing a woman can do is have a boyfriend get married or god forbid get pregnant. in fact it seems to be more dangerous to get pregnant than to give birth, and the most dangerous proffession is school teaching. When in reality the worst thing you can do is get in your car, worst thing you can eat is sugar and cleaning your house with the lovely stuff that disenfects causes cancer, infertility and brain damage. Thats not been on the local news lately.
I'm SO SORRY. I had no idea that such a lovely article that explained so much about the history, use and abuse of "pit bull" breeds happened would be SO MISUNDERSTOOD.
I watch Animal Planet. I read the newspapers. I know that "pit bull" type dogs have acquired a TERRIBLE reputation. The question is--WHY?
I thought the article answered that very well.
I may have mentioned before on this forum that my mother's West Highland White Terrier bit my cousin. The child had to have 36 stitches put into his face. My uncle begged my parents not to put the dog down because he said it was his son's "fault."
However, when my mom found out I was pregnant, she went to her vet and he encouraged her to have the dog euthanized. He knew Andy well and felt he would be an unacceptable risk for a baby or toddler.
I also knew a woman (she volunteered with me at Meals-on-Wheels) who had to have six surgeries because she was attacked by a Dalmation. This dog roared out of her neighbor's yard and threw her to the ground and tore a big chunk out of her forearm. Her crime? Walking down the sidewalk in front of the neighbor's house.
I'm sure each and every one of you could come up with two stories like these two. Most of them would not be "pit bull" type dogs. Just TRY to listen to both sides for once. There is a very good reason, historically, for the "split-personality" of the "pit bull" breed (not the dogs individually). READ THE ARTICLE, it makes sense.
I own 1 american bulldog and 3 pitbull mixes. they are so friendly. I have a 7 year old sister and she rides them like they are horses. She plays dress up with them. My dogs are like my children. I can trust them with anyone or anything. Socialization is the key. when i sell a puppy a tell the new owners that the puppy is their new best friend to go every where with them for the next few months. My aunt didn't socialize her huskey and it bit her child!!! Most peoples fear of pitbulls is because of the media. Have you ever seen front page news about a Lab or a poodle tearing up some poor old lady or child? probably not. Were i live pitbulls were banned and for no reason. a month ago my neighbors lab tor up a lady and it didn't even make into the paper. If some one is walking thier pitbull without a muzzle it makes the news! Ain't that some S**T!!!
No one can argue with the numbers that for how many years have pit bulls have been highest in KILLING people? For as long as I can remember. I know, everyone who has pitbulls on this forum would not own them if they weren't 'great dogs', you love them like children... and just like any defensive parent, you may be overlooking the bad... not in your own dogs per se, but in the breed in general. I don't think they are a breed that 'just anybody' should have. More of the general public have pitbulls for the WRONG reasons than the right ones. Dog dummies who have no experience with dogs want them for home protection, personal protection, guarding DRUGS...I have personally witnessed, and illegal dog fighting. These people pick up a cheap pup, and often give it very little socialization, leave it tied in the back yard, or 'train them to fight'. The dogs are then not properly contained because the people are again, stupid, and then their pit bull type breed dog goes off and maims or kills a child. This happened 2 weeks ago in a large town 40 miles from my home. This boy is scarred for life on his face.
Until the stupid people can be controlled from not purchasing pit bull type breeds I am for legislation restricting them in urban areas. The greater good and safetly of the community should always come before individual rights. If you are smart enough to have a pit bull than you should be smart enough to apply obtain a special license to own one, or move in the country where you can own an elephant if you choose.
I always try to talk stupid people (particularly with children) out of purchasing one. Stupid people+ pitbulls= danger. As a note, 40-50 years ago my breed, boxers also had a bad rap, which they deserved for being mean and aggressive. Now after 40 years, they are known for being great with children (not saying that a boxer has never attacked a child). I think due to the large # of idiots owning and indescriminatly breeding pit bull types, the breed as a hard long uphill road to climb before they lose the bad reputation.
So your saying that because I have AST ( pits) that you don’t want me to live in the suburbs ?? or in the same neighborhood as YOU? or in the same Neighborhood as children?
Greater good … over individual rights?? Ummm, why do you think America is American?? We are a nation of freedom of individual Rights!! Any other county, continent , area, that has the greater Good over individual rights is on the line of Communism….
I think laws and regulation for ownership should be changed .
PUNISH THE DEED--- NOT THE BREED **** Be it Animal or Human …
I am saying children have the right to walk the streets in their neighborhoods without fear of being killed or maimed by dogs. So I guess that's what I am saying. The main areas in my state with pit bans are large URBAN, not suburban areas. Again, I am not blaming the dogs but the large number of irresponsible people owning them. There is a problem, so if it's not the dogs, or owners, who's problem is it? It ends up being innocent children.
I love it when I wake up and check out my favorite pet forum, where I go to share pictures and stories and worries about my dogs, only to see that someone has advocated that my dogs be made illegal to own. I would expect it on a site where people are generally uneducated about dogs, like a site about quiltmaking, or auto parts. Somehow it feels different here, in a "community" where I feel comfortable. Makes me wonder if there are those out there that are actually happy when I post that my dog is sick.
I really can't imagine coming to the same board where Beagle owners come to find comfort when their beagle is sick or dies and posting that there are no nice beagles, or that since so many jerks own them, you shouldn't be able to own yours either. Maybe post that right in the middle of a thread that started as a very good informational article about beagles.
Somehow there are those who don't mind doing it to those of us who own pit bulls. We should just be smart enough to understand that we shouldn't be allowed to have our dogs and smile about it. Maybe they figure that since we deal with ugliness and prejudice from ignorant people so much that we are used to it, & it doesn't bother us at all. Maybe they think we will read what they said and go PTS our dogs. I don't know. This forum, this dog lover's community, is generally a place I can go and share about my dogs without worrying about having to defend their character. It's a nice break.
(STILL not going to defend my dogs' character THIS morning either)
In 7 years straight, out of all the breeds of a dog to bite a human, the pit bull was 4th...from the bottom.
If you don't actually have a pit bull or pit bull type dog you have no idea what it is like. You have no idea what it is like to always be in fear they will make a pit bull ban where you live, and your fur child will be taken away. You have no idea how upsetting it is to find out that people are heartless enough to hate your dog, even before they have met it, because of something another dog has done. You have no idea what it is like when people are happy to see your dog is going to die or is sick because "it is a threat to them", you have no idea what is like when people say they want your dog, your child, your baby to die.

I wake up all the time to pit bulls runing around my neighborhood after the neighborhood cats all the time. When I go outside they run off. I am not affraid of them when I go outside because I know they run from me, but if they were to come after me then I'd call the police on them to come shoot them in the middle of the night when the dog pound is closed.
Lucky they arent that way here, once you yell at them to go home, they usally do.
I have a friend of mine who has a male pitbull dog, he is as slap happy as can be until *I* come around, then he hates my guts for some reason. I have never gotten around the dog but one time and I always ask them to put the dog up before I come to visit. So they do.
They also have another one that is in love with me, but if you shoot the finger at that dog she is going after you.
I don't know, I have mixed feelings about them.
Some of them are mean by no fault of theirs not knowing any better, to those who are just like kittens.
I guess ALL BREEDS are like this, it just depends on the dog.
Thank you peanut, your exactly right. =) With ALL breed, no matter what type it depends on the dog. I myself have NEVER been bitten my a pit bull, rottie, or dobie. But I have indeed been bitten my a cocker spaniel, a golden retriever, and a yorkie.
~Alicat It is my understanding that you are a breeder? You breed Boxers right? Do you realize that the BSL that you claim you would be happy to see go in to affect in suburban areas will not only affect APBT but other large breed dogs as well maybe even your own breed? Boxers are actually on many dangerous dog lists right along with APBT, Saint Benards, German Shephards...ETC....
I am so disgusted by your comments you are obviously VERY misinformed about BSL because if you were educated in the very least you would know that BSL effects mostly responsible, loving, law abiding pet owners. The criminals out there and the less than scrupulous characters who may own a Pit bull are not going to follow any laws they will still own Pit Bulls and if not a Pit Bull they will just turn to another breed to destroy.
You know what I live in a suburban area and my Pit Bulls are never roaming the streets as you claim they are in most suburban areas. Hmmmm wonder why that is? I guess you could call it RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERSHIP!
Your way of thinking makes me sick to my stomach!
***Edited By: GinaH on 8/29/2005 1:20:29 PM*** Reason: **
Thank you GinaH. =) i would never let Shadow roam the streets, nor would ANY responsible owner that owns ANY breed. I too live in a surburbian area. And I don't care if you think my dog should die because it will be "protecting" children like me, it is wrong.
Alicat- You do know that Pit Bulls are not the only dogs that bite right?
I have been bitten by a Rott, a Doberman, and a Chihuahua. ANyone want to guess which dog left its impression on my face forever? The CHIHUAHUA! Thats right I had to have 23 stitches to put my bottom lip back on, because the dog I was letting lick my face decided my lip might be a good snack. After this dog bit me he went crazy and kept trying to attack me. He was put to sleep, thank God. I was only 10 years old when this happened.
I now own two beautiful, intillegent, extremely loyal PIT BULL TERRIERS! I also have two small children a 2 year old and a 5 month old. It takes responsible ownership of any dog to make sure that nothing will happen.
Don't leave your kids alone with ANY dog for ANY amount of time. (Both kids and dogs are unpredictable). Keep your dog on a leash unless in a fenced yard. Don't breed a dog with a bad temperment. Socialize your dog at an early age. Learn their behavior, if your dog is dog aggressive work around that so that another dog will not get attacked. Teach your kids how to play nice with animals. Do not let your kids pet stray or strange pets without the owners ok.
All common sense. But I guess what you Pit Nazis don't realize is that when they were pit fighting, reputable breeders shot all dogs that showed human aggression. Even in the description of the American Pit Bull Terrier it says that they should not be human aggressive. Learn your facts before you come on here saying they are bad. You guys are all just buying into the media lies.
