To everyone who responded to my little toe nail query yesterday: I went to the vet and yes, Floyd does need to get his nail ripped out...and if there is any infection near his bone, the vet may have to CUT OFF HIS FIRST KNUCKLE on his little toe!!! Poor baby.... He is only 19 weeks old but the vet is going to desex him as well because his balls have dropped....even though I thought they had to be 6 months? But I asked a nurse at the vet (second opinion!!) and she said because he is a big dog, he can have it done early. HE said it is better for him to get it all done at once than coming back in 5 weeks to get knocked out again! AND he is getting microchipped too! He's going to be a sooky boy tonight. AND he may have a skin allergy which the vet who gave him his 2 needles said was FINE!!! HE looks pink under his black and white coat! (He's a Dalmatian). He's going to check it out further and put him on antibiotics for his toe and we have to check to see if the skin changes at all as a result of this medication. So thanks to everyone who told me to go to the vet to get it checked anyway! Susan PS Supermommy, the vet has had a lot to do with skin disorders and Dals and he said that they can get a "bronzing of the skin" if they eat too much meat -- something to keep in mind if yours has any discolourations.
The poor guy! Yes, as long as a dog's testicles have descended from the body cavity, they can be neutered. Most people wait until they are about 6 months old just to get them past the vaccination part of their lives. Nowdays, many humane societies and such are neutering and spaying puppies that are as young as 8 weeks old, just so they could be certain the dogs didn't breed again and produce more puppies may end up at the humane society.
8 weeks old in my opinion is way too young to spueter. I just read on here that some ones dog passed away from anestesia before a spay. 8 week old puppers are just way too young. My vet kept my Piper over night after her spay just to be safe. There has to be a safety line for these dogs .Also my vet wont even spay until the pupper is 6 months old.
