Ivydragon, get a life! Once you post, you've lost control, we all know that.
Human beings have inadvertently bred dogs to depend upon us to the point that they're actually genetically programmed to interpret our facial expressions and tones of voice. We do have a responsibility to honor that bond and not abuse the animals.
That said, if the people who care so desperately for these animals are dead, logic says that they can't care for the animals. In a disaster, we try to save everyone, but there has to be triage. Get the babies and old people first, get the sick and injured out, then the healthy young people, then the animal people. That is what we are doing. A dog can forage on garbage for a short time. A baby cannot.
This discussion of how we deal with disasters flows naturally from any questions about PETA or other animal welfare organizations. I don't think that anyone was wrong to take the topic and run with it.
I do blame the people that could have gotten out. If the able people would have left(like I said in my first post) the disabled would be rescued by now instead of them spending time just getting healthy people out. It sucks they lost their homes but I would have been out of there the minute they said a hurricane was coming. It breaks my heart that sick people were left their and it makes me want to beat the healthy people that could have left and are now wasting alll the time that could have been used getting the elderly and sick out. I blame those people that had a warning and stayed even though they could have left for how bad this has turned out. No one ever would have expected it to be this bad so I cna't really judge the responce of our government. They probally could have done mroe right away. But it also would have been much simplier with just the sick people to deal with and not the whole city.
Joyce...I understand what you are saying, but many of the healthy people that stayed are the animal lovers that were told they couldn't take their pets with them and wanted to stay with them like many people on this forum said they would do. Most of the others were poor black people who did not have the transportation to leave the city and were told to go to the convention center and football arena which, if you were told to go there with your children and small infants wouldn't you expect to find drinking water and some type of food there? It was someones fault it wasn't there. Period. You ask yourself if it had been NYC, and there were more white people and more people that had money stuck in a flood, I bet there would have been quicker relief. Oooooooppppsss.
Although I agree with the fact we should save our human family before our pets - I don't think anyone has the right to just leave their dogs/cats behind. When you adopt a pet you are taking their life into your hands. There is no natural instinct (not all of the time), they are DOMESTICATED. They cannot fend for themselves. These people knew a level 5 hurricane was coming, the pets should have been boarded and the city should have gotten those people the hell out of there. There is no reason anyone should have drowned in their apartment. it is absolutely ridiculous. The city messed up and people and animals paid with their lives.
I stand by everything I stated. And continue to. People who are blaming the people still stuck down there are nothing less than ignorant. If that raises your hackles then I suspect it applies to you. And don't tell me to start my own thread, I was totally on topic to what was happening in this thread.
So back on the topic what IS peta doing? Nothing. They are a crap organization made up of fanatacal animal extremists. But you won't see them lift a friggin finger to help. Ok I am done with this topic. The maturity level of some posters simply stuns me.
OK .. Just to JUMP on the OFF original Topic….and On to the Sub Topic…
As Far a rescues Go…
1 > Human Rescues … HAVE organization in place … that are Federally funded and well Manned … Funded with TAX Payers Money…
SO the Human rescue efforts are In ” Prime Site “….
2> Animal Rescue … Do as well have Organized Groups In place…. BUT are NOT ( in any real part) federal Funded … And Our TAX money does NOT go to Save / Rescue Animals. Most comes from private sources .
And NOT In “ Prime Site “
SO it is Each Individual effort that HELPS all the animals … So I will PUT the Animal rescue OVER the Human Rescue Efforts…
Because I know Human rescue Is manned And Funded with My hard earned TAX Money… already.
Now I will as well put in extra … like gathering and buying items to PACK care packages for those Displaced by this horrific event!
[[ As I am doing NOW… and mind you I am self paying for these care packages]] ~~ (( AND in the next few months … My Company will be going down to try and help rebuild… or help with clean up.... if needed. ))
