i have a question maybe it is stupid but how long do you think a dog should be able to stay out side.ok i understand that when the heat index is over 100 and all that stuff then they can't stay out for alon time but when it is warm out and it is only 86 with not much of a heat index. and the wind is blowing fairly good then shouldn't the dog be able to stay out as long as it wants to as long as it has shade and water.maybe it is just me but a dog should be able to enjoy some sun shine for a little while and not be cooped up in the house all the time.
When it is PERFECT weather out I leave them out from sun up to sun down, but I have very secure fencing and automatic water and feeders, and shade trees and a couple wood houses. They LOVE it. We live in MI, where they are in a lot in the winter :(
Technically it shouldn't be outside unsupervised, so you'd know if the dog was too hot, thirsty, bored, etc. Mine will play in the yard for hours if I sit outside and read a book. If I don't go outside, within 10 minutes the yard is being dug up, she's eating my plants.. she gets bored on her own.
well i live in tn where the weather is very hot most of the time so when it is not to hot like today i let them stay out as long as possible as long as there is a fair breeze going and i do not have to supervise them all the time because they do not eat the plants or dig much. so i think as long as they have shade trees and plenty of water the what is the big deal about them staying out side for a little while. its not like it is raining or i never check on them.
I have never, ever had a problem in leaving my dogs out ALL day in perfect weather. Just be reasonable, and I never leave them out if I am leaving, not even for 10 minutes. As long as you check on them and can see or hear what is going on they are fine.
thank you alicat1 i have a window i look out of pretty often. and then i go out there every hour and i never leave them outside if i am going to leave the house because you can say your only going to be gone 10 min but you never know how traffic will be or what ever.
I go outside with my dogs EVERYTIME I take them out because I don't trust sickos these days plus if they get into something I want to be able to explain in detail what I saw and be able to take a sample in to the vet for a quicker diagnosis.
That being said...we stay out until the little boogers decide to wander back up on the porch and stand at the door looking at me to go in (that is if we do not decide to have a barking fit. Then it is three wanrings and then mean old mommy comes and scoops you up and no play time fun outside for you)
In the heat here in Maryland they don't like to stay ou there much because even the grass is so hot and trying to lay in it I can imagine....so they like to stay out sometimes max 45 minutes. Sometimes they pee real fast then run right back to the door to get back into the ac. On nice shady days they could stay out there all day.
I guess it is up to you however long you and your dogs are comfortable with being left outside. Just make sure they have water and shade to get to their little foot pads are really sensitive. My dogs get fresh cold hose water daily in their outdoor bowl, sometimes they like to go for swims too....

Well I live in Alberta so winter time they go out to do there buiness only. In the summer it is nice here. I have also fenced off half of my yard for my dogs. They have gravel on one half of it and grass on the other. They go potty in the gravel and lay around on the grass. They also have plenty of water and food all the time and because there is no trees in that side of the yard we put up one of those tarp style garages for shade. (neigbors thought we were crazy to go to that extreme for our dogs but too bad!!) They love it outside when the weather is nice so I hate to keep them closed up in the house on nice days. I spend a lot of time in my yard in the summer so when I am outside they have free run of the entire yard but when I am not they have to stay in there half. This is because it is very secure and doggie proof. Also I am a stay at home mom so I am always home and we play lots in the daytime. If my babies want in they let me know and I am always checking on them. My one neighbor loves my dogs as much as I do. So if I have to go somewhere during the day and they don't want to come in she will babysit and has access to my home to let them in and out when they want to.
