I have a mini-Schnuazer who is now 19weeks - female. She is now 11 lbs. Brief history then my question. Breeder told me to feed her Science Diet Adult small bite as Scnauzer breeders concerned of body growing too fast for joints to accomodate. Vet said OK after her post-purchase examination last June. I just had some booster shots done and vet said that while she was in great condition, he wanted me to switch her to another Hills product sold exclusively at vets - Prescription Diet P/D. So I did the slow switch over 10 days. For each food, I would pre-soak slighlt before feeding her just to soften up. Now, I notice her beard is red. I asked vet who said her saliva is red. Now, here is my question. Somebody I know had a mini-schnauzer who recently passed away from cancer. She was told that mini-Schanuzers have a tough time metabolizing protein and and high protein diet is not good on their liver. I checked my 2 dog foods and this is what bags said.....P/D has 28% protein at 280g/kg. The Science Diet has 21% protein at 215g/kg. Clearly, the new food has a much higher protein content and her beard has been red only after she started on this. Vet says don't worry about it but, as I am sure most will agree here, you ask 5 vets the same question and you will get 5 answers. Anybody here have any comments/opinions? Thanks !
i dont know about the protien issue-- have never heard anyone mentioning protien issues with mini schnauzers before. did a search and it looks like a low protien diet is indicated for dogs with liver shunts or pancreatitis. Has your dog had a CBC to rule out these things? If not I would ask for one and see if your pups blood values are off-- if they arent i wouldnt worry about a lower protien diet. Your breeder may also be aware that someof her dogs have liver problems and this may be why she suggested a lower protien diet. I honestly dont know. But i couldnt find any reason to feed a healthy mini schnauzer a lower protien diet.
If she were mine, id change foods-- get her off the Science Death food. Its not good for her, as its mostly corn and by products even the prescription P/D diet is.
what kind of bowl is she eating from? plastic? metal? ceramic? that can have an effect on the beard changing colors too
i wish you luck

A REPLY TO CALLAIN..just to clarify, it was NOT my breeder who mention liver issues but rather a friend who had a mini-schnauzer with this problem. As for feeding aparatus, I use matching metal bowls for food and water. Also, as for both these foods being primarily fillers, well that topic has been talked to death MANY MANY times over on this board. I do have my puppy in puppy school being run by one of the nurses at my vet..I'll ask her next week about this and red beard. Thx......
