Ijust got back from one of the shelters here in Houston that is adopting out dogs & cats that have been ok'd to adopt out as in mo owner or owner turn in from Katrina.
The cats came in last week so terrified as we all know how cats can get. Many have already been adopted.
The dogs started trickling in this week! Both times I have gone it was like a mad house. Today was even more so swamped with people wanting so badly to adopt. Many have already been adopted thank goodness! The puppies as usual are so happy & playful. It's the dogs that are over a year old that get to me. It was that forever fearful look in their eyes.....where is my owner? Where am I & why are all these people staring at me? Some are just down right cranky....but who could blame them. First they were abandoned for days, finally some kind soal plucked them up, fed & watered them, eventually they were loading on trucks to the Houston SPCA after their stay at the make shift shelter. They were sorted once again at the HSPCA & shipped off to another shelter for adoption. Now they sit behind bars all miserable wondering what's going to happen next? Where is my owner? When are they going to come get me?.........
Thank you to everyone who has helped in some way! I'm sure some slow TLC will warm these animals back up to life once again. They have been through so much in their already short lives.....
it makes me so happy to hear that !!!!!! but also makes me fearful that the scum will crawl out from under their rocks and take some too. the absolute horro those poor animals have been through brings me too tears everytime i see them talking about it on CNN.
its not only dogs and cats, they have had to rescue zoo animals, and aquarium animals also. not to mention the horses and other livestock =(
Texans are proving that their hearts, like their state are large and true. Thanks to all of you and all the other people in all the other states who are contributing so much to ease both human and animal needs.
heres a crazy question...what are they doing to reunite these pets with owners? I know the shelters cant keep them forever...but how heart breaking it has to be for all involved...I wish I had a good answer for it all...
I understand that the shelters or over crowded and cant hold the dogs and cats for ever but it seems that they should give the owners more time to find them. I dont know how they determine that they have no owner. Cant they just foster all of them for now and wait and see if someone comes for them.
There is a huge data base set up to reunite pets with their owners. The Houston SPCA for one is holding the dogs & sorting through them as to who are owner turn ins etc. The ones that are still looking for owners or have found the owners are still at the Houston SPCA. :)
