i am 3 months pregnant, and i am interested in ideas and suggestions on how to get my 9 month old lab pitt bull mix puppy prepared for the baby, i have already conkered him not jumping up on people unless on comand, is there anything else i can do, i really want him to stay out of the babys room. he has been around my friends kids but they are 1 and up... any ideas are helpfull thank you!
a gate for the babies room is an idea and taking the dog around little ones, he does not even have to meet them just be exposed to them. so the new baby will not be the first time he as ever seen a baby. also before bringing baby home, have daddy bring home a few articles of the baby's clothes,so he can smell them. and when mama comes home. have mama go meet the dog w/o baby. since the dog is going to be excited to see mama. then have mama bring the dog outside to the baby. so they meet on nuetral ground. then walk into the house as one big happy fam.
Starting some things now is a good idea.. Such as decideing on where the dog can and can't go now before the baby arrives. For example, is the dog going to be allowed on the couch? If not start that training now so the dog doesn't associate this new rule with the now presents of the baby. The dog could see the baby as some sort of challenge, or threat. Buy the dog that special bed just for him and make it more appealing then the couch, bait the edges of the bed on a daily basis with goodies for him to find, and buy him bones to chew, only on his bed. Playing a tape with a crying baby is good to get the dog used to hearing these sounds, and giveing a yummy bone at the same time would be a good association with crying sounds and the yummy bone. You could start to walk around with a doll wrapped up in a blanket for pretend, just to get the dog used to that sight. Takeing a towel scented with the baby, and putting the towel under the dogs food bowls will bring another good association with the baby and eating. Treating the dog when the baby is in the room is a good association as well. To the dog it means that when baby is in the room, I get treats, and they are really special treats. He will see the baby as a food provider, and food providers are very important. Getting the stroller out and have him walk beside it now is a good idea to get used to the stroller. Some dogs find strollers scarey. If I think of anymore, I'll post them.
