I want to get my 6 year old a puppy. Her chihhuhua died a couple months ago and I want to get her another dog for christmas a small dog could you please help me? I have thought of maybe guinea pigs or even a rabbit but they seem way to aggressive at times. Thanks and God Bless Amanda
can you answer a few questions to help narrow things down? are you looking for short hair, long hair, shedding, nonshedding? does barky bother you? what activity level? is more active ok, or do you need less active? will someone be home with the puppy during the day? do you want another chihuahua? this will help with giving advice. do you know how stressful it is to get a puppy at christmas? would later be better? thanks.
I think maybe you should go for a guinea pig untill she is old enough to choose what she really wants. If you find a local breeder and don't go to a pet store they won't be nippy at all:) They are great pets for little kids,at least sixish anyway! I am 22 and just got more after not having them for a couple years.
I know you said you wanted small dog, but a lab is a fantastic dog around children. I don't have smalll children, but I had compay once who brought their 2 year old son, and my lab was great with him. He crawled all over her as though she were a big stuffed animal, and she was completely tolerant of him.
I'm not as knowledgeable as most of these folks, but, JMO, I think a sorta-big dog is the way to go. Kids sometimes don't understand how to play gently and a bigger dog can generally put up with a lot more. It doesn't have to be huge... what about a lab or a boxer?
(What I really want to do is recommend the breed I have, but he's just a mutt, so it's hard to say, go and find yourself a doberman/border collie/GSD mix, they're great! :-) )
Some dachshunds are good with kids, lhasa ahpsos are great too. I would not recommend a cocker. They tend to have "rage syndrome" and that is when they attack a nything with no provocation. Even some well-bred cockers can have this since it is a problem generally in so much of the breed it's not worth risking.(I do like cockers however)
Poor bred dogs prehaps, and the "rage" syndrome has been found in many breeds, not just cocker spanials.
Find a well breed cocker and they are fantastic. I have someone sending me a puppy to show for them in a few months. I adore their dogs, they are sound, stable, fantastic, and capable of working and not just cute orniments.
But as with any breed, not breeding for the full package (health, conformation, temperment) creates problems. Cockers where the most popular dog in the US for about 15 years. Thats enough time to ruin the majority of the breed and thats what happened.
How about a mixed breed? They tend to be ver nice dogs.. i have a doxie/min pin mix that is cute as can be. She is friendly, protective, loves the kids( i have a 6 ,8 and 12 year old) and is full grown weighing in at a whopping 9 pounds!
I would say a cocker spaniel.Like the others said,a well bred one.It depends on the dog.I have 2 cockers and one is growls sometimes but the other one I dont think he even knows how to growl!lol I have had a coker that bit my lil brother and we had Him PTS.But that didnt stop us from getting 2 more, because we knew it was the dog not the breed.
Also, her daughter had a Chi before,so she probably isnt very rough with small dogs.
