I have a 15 week old puppy. I do socialize my dog w/ my parents dog and my firends dogs. None of them have been sick and/or coughing. My puppy (a toy mix) has recently come down w/ a cough. I never got her the bordertella (?) vaccine. So I'm guessing that's what she has. I'm taking her to the vet on Saturday. But I'm wondering if any of you know if its to late to get the bordertella vaccine since she is already coughing. her hacking is worst in the morning before she eats/drinks. Is there any home remedies for a coughing pup?
On a side not she has dry skin...any suggestions/home remedies?
skittles, does your puppy have a runny nose?? Is it esting well? Does it seem to have a fever? Sorry for all the questions but, there is a new flu going around in dogs. I have been treating a new puppy of mine for 3 weeks today. Vet has been treating for kennel cough but, I really think he has this canine flu. Hacking, gagging cough, runny nose, fever and a high white cell count are the symptoms. My puppy has had 3 of those 4 symptoms. Some dogs do not show all the symptoms and some are showing no symptoms at all. Or, at least that is my understanding of it. I don't mean to scare you but, can you get your puppy to the vet sooner than tomorrow? It may be nothing at all with your puppy's cough but, I would watch it closely.
Pope1982 posted some info on here. A few others have posted some threads too. I will try to find the threads and post the links for you.
You should go to the vet to see if it's kennel cough. When our GSD Abby had kennel cough the vet told my mom if she had waited any longer to bring her in, it would have gone into her lungs and become pnuemonia. Needless to say, my mom was not happy that it was my two dogs that had given her kennel cough :X
It took one of my fosters 1 week to get over it and another one of my fosters 6 weeks to get over it.Your vet will not let you get the vaccine till they are completely over it.If shes coughing and gagging,I bet she has it.
Here are the links to the other treads. It may be nothing at all or could be kennel cough. But, read over these threads. Hope this helps. Maybe I am just being paranoid but, my little guy has been so sick for 3 weeks. On his 4th antibiotic. I just don't want anyone elses puppy to have to suffer like my guy has.
She does not have a runny nose, fever, watery eyes or showing any other sypmtoms. she has her normal appetite and is playing normally. She doesn't cough much. I'll see if I can get in earlier and I'll monitor her closely.
Kennel cough is a dry hacking cough. The dog will usually cough more after playing or exercise. If your pup does have kennel cough, she needs to go to the vet for antibiotics. It does not get better on itsd own or with home remedies, and if not treated by a vet, can turn into pneumonia. I hope whatever it is that your pup gets better soon.
It sounds more like kennel cough to me after reading that. But I'm sure the vet can tell me for sure. But at least now I can ask her about this new 'flu' just so that my vet is aware if she hasn't been informed already.
minpinlover, where did you get your dog from in MI? I live in MI close to the Detroit area.
From a breeder in Capac. I think that is close to Flint.
I hope you have good news about your puppy. I am sorry to be so paranoid but, I have had him for 3 weeks today and he got off the plane coughing. Been on antibiotics since the day after getting him. He is 2 weeks behind in vaccinations because my vet said it would not be good to give them with him so sick. But, hopefully he can have them today. I plan to take him in this afternoon. So, I just worry when I hear someone else mention a coughing puppy. Yes, I'm paranoid.....I agree.
My pup is a garbage gut. Two weeks ago she was coughing. She has all her shots. So,I took her in, she ate some weeds outside and it burned her throat. She had to have two shots and an antibiotic. I guess you never know.
It sounds like kennel cough. They treat kennel cough by giving the dog the vaccine and antibiotics. Kennel cough is comparable to the common cold in humans. It will go away on it's own. One of my fosters had kennel cough. He was given the vaccine and the antibiotics but the vaccine will only work if it is the same strain. Like in humans .. you can get the flu shot but if it's not the same strain that's going around you can still get the flu. You can give your dog Robitussin DM ..... it is will stop him from coughing and he will sleep well through the night. The dosage is 1cc per 10 lbs. Hope this info helps. My foster could not sleep through the night and neither could we. After the Robitussin we all slept well.
Update! Well the vet seemed convinced it wasn't the canine flu or even kennel cough, well actually it might be a very mild case. He told me to keep an eye on her incase it becomes worse though. He said since she really only 'coughs' in the morning before she eats/drinks. That I shouldn't worry.
I guess I have a mother's worry since she is my first. She doesn't cough only but once or twice during the day and she doens't cough at night (so she doesn't keep me up) So I guess she'll get better on her own.
I'll let you know her progress. But the vet did ease my worried head. So I'm not going to worry unless her cough gets worse. Then I'll take her in again.
She did get her last Distemeper and bordatella vaccines.
I fostered a dog because he was sick with kennel cough. He was coughing all the time. I felt better once I realized that kennel cough is equivalent to the common cold in humans. You can give medicine to eliminate the symptoms but it will go away on it's own. Glad you feel better -- I bet you felt worse than he did.
I am so glad to hear you had good news about your puppy.
Michigan.....makes me wonder. That is where my little guy came from. He does finally seem to be getting better. I hope the vet thinks so too. He goes back at the end of this week for another white cell count.
Hi I just got a puppy from Michigan a maltipoo and after 2 days I noticed a cough. It was a sparadic hack like he was going to throw up. Sounds like kennel cough...his sheet from the breeder said he got that shot though...I gave him some garlic and a little home herbal remedy. He does have diarreha and I noticed today a flat white worm in his stool. So he was dewormed, I called the puppy place I got him and she said go to the store and just get a dewormer. It sounds excatly like what your puppy had. Cupid is his name and he's my first so a little overly motherly as well. He has full appetite and plays, runs, looks normal. Just coughs and poops a worm!!! Should I go get the dewormer at the store or get one at the vet? Does it matter?
