Greetings all, It's been exactly 2 wks since I brought home from a local shelter the sweetest 6 mo. old female mix (long nose, big erect ears, body like saluki, head like basenji, soft 1" hair, feathery tail curls up). She's so affectionate and smart. I've had one brief visit to a vet who says her throat looks fine, her chest sounds fine. But she has an on-going stuffy nose and sneezes a lot. It doesn't seem related to flowers or foliage and I cleaned by house. She's got plenty of energy and is eating. But sometimes when she sleeping she sort of gasps because of the nose problem. Wish I could help her...and then I also wonder if it's contagious. Any thoughts from you with much experience? Her name is Selma. (Can we post photos anywhere here? Thanks.
I would just suspect kennel cough before anything else. It can take a week or so for a dog to get over, and since her background before you got her is suspect.. It's not contagious to humans, but is to other dogs. It might also be a food allergy, but usually those manifest through skin problems, not stuffy nose. As far as photos, there's no way to post pics on this site, but www.shutterfly.com does allow free posting.
kennel cough is bronchitis that can be contracted from other dogs, stresses, or bad tempurature, as well as most things that would "cause" a cold in humans. It resembles a chest cold in people. It sounds like something is caught in the dog's throat. The vaccine is the bordetella shot. It can heal on its own, or can be kncocked out by antibiotics. It could also be allergies. Some breeds have problems with allergies. Frosty had identical symptoms to kennel cough. When I took him to the vet, Dr. Nack gave him an allergy shot and it all went away.
