I talked to a friend of mine that lives in Coppell, Tx. She has a little 5lb.(maybe not even that) Yorkie that she absolutely adores. Yesterday she was telling me that there is a huge hawk that has been sitting on their fence in the backyard. He has been coming an going for about a couple of months. She said he waits until she takes her baby out to potty. He is just waiting to try to grab this little thing and kill her. Scares me to death for her.
My aunt lives in Van Tx.She had a Boston Terrier and a boston mix. They came up missing,we thought they had been dogging napped.needless to say her husband found, lets just say them,in the woods behind their house. They think it was a chicken hawk that had been flying around.Be careful.
If you are not going to shoot the hawk then what's the point of firing the gun? If the noise of a gun will scare it away the hawk then the noise of a fire cracker would as well. The bird can't see the bullet flying towards it. The only affect of the gun is noise. This noise can be achieved by lighting a fire cracker. If you shoot the gun towards the hawk , it does have a downward trajectory and can hit someone. People really do need to think before they speak.
I used to have a hawk they visited all the time at my last farm. He finally got ahold of one of my chickens that was heavier then that little pup. Your friend really does need to try and get rid of that thing. Shooting a gun in the air, firecrackers are all great ideas
Could your friend get an Exercise Pen, and cover it snugly with a tarp? A regular 8-panel ex-pen is easy to set up in a square configuration, and you can buy a cheap 4 by 4 tarp at Walmart for about $5, put it on with some zip-strips (Walmart automotive section, $1 or $2.) That way there would be something between flying death and the Yorkie.
And I will second the fact that hawks are most definitely protected species and injuring them carries a stiff penalty.
"People really do need to think before they speak."
**Excuse me, but I gave my opinion...just because you did not like it does not mean I should have thought harder before I said it.
Firecrackers can be just as dangerous as BB guns. My neighbor across the street has a severly disfigured face from a firecracker that went off to soon. Happened right in front of his little sons. And my brother, 2 or 3 weekends ago was shot in the eye with a BB that his friend shot off. Luckily, the dr. said his contact saved his vision in that eye.
I know what kinds of results those kinds of things can have on people and that is why people need to be responsible when using them. No one said spin around in a circle, carelessly shooting away.
Anyways, no need to explain myself although it seems I already have.
Look crazybout dogs I did not say kill it. Hawks are NOT protected where I live .Hawks are everywhere here. And telling someone to give it mice is stupid . Dont you think that if you feed the stupid hawk that it is only going to keep coming back for more.. .
I have heard of people blowing their hands off with firecrackers and I'm sure a medium sized bird would blow up quite nicely if hit with a firecracker.
Put the illegal fireworks and firearms down people.
Does your friend have anyway of building a totally enclosed area in her back yard? They have kennels that are totally enclosed with tops on them.
It might be a little costly but worth the life of her pet in the long run. If the area she is living in is prone to have hawks and she chooses to live there then she needs to adapt and make sacrfices in order to protect her dog.

Here how about this...throw rocks at it. Try not to pelt it, throw them in the vicinity of the hawk. I throw rocks at rabbits in my yard all of the time so that my german shepherd can go in the yard. Believe me, rabbits are fast but Abby's caught some baby bunnies in her day. And I do not HIT them or injure them, so calm down, I just scare them away.
