Every so often, my 8 mth old will cough - sounds like what I imagine a cat coughing up a furball sounds like - sorta gagging, dry hacking - like a person with bronchitis. She will hack 2 or 3 times and then she's fine. She doesn't cough anything up. I've noticed her do it maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 2 days. Sound like anything serious? Should I take her to the vet? She seems fine otherwise. Thanks.
It sounds like your typical case of kennel cough. A trip to the vet wouldn't hurt, as they can give antibiotics to treat it. Usually, kennel cough heals itself. You should let the vet check it out to be sure, but I doubt it's serious
Just from what you've said, I dont think it's kennel cough. I was recently reading a dog behavior book and it said that dogs do a type of reverse sneeze that sounds like they're hacking something out of their throat. I know my dog does it occasionally, I think all dogs do it, probably once or twice a day. Here's a description of kennel cough. http://www.cah.com/library/kennekcough.html
What you describe sounds like kennel cough but you should take to the vet just to make sure. Sometime a collapsing trachia(sp.?) can make a dog start coughing . Kennel cough is just a fancy name for respitory infection just like use humans get. A vet will usually prescribe a prescription antibiotic to help out. Make sure you tell them before you go that you have another pp incase thaey want you to bring it in too with your older pup. You should keep them seperated until the coughing stops . All in all most cases of mild kennel cough will clear up just as human colds do, but a vet is always a safe bet .
Thanks - that may be what it is. She goes to daycare twice a week and is exposed to a lot of dogs while she's there. I'm a little mad at my vet though - my dog had the nasal vaccine for Bortatella before she started puppy classes in November AND we took her to the vet prior to taking her to daycare about a month ago in order to get the injectable vaccine - he told us it wasn't necessary - the nasal vaccine would protect her for a year. Anyway - I will take her to the vet again... Thanks for your help.
Minniyar, I'm not quite understanding why it doesn't sound like kennel cough. Please explain that to me. It could be an allergy, too. I had a serious problem with Frosty and my vet gaev him an allergy shot. The coughing went away.
My rottie occasionally has the "reverse" sneeze. The first time I heard it, I thought he was choking on something. It also sounded like he was gasping for breath. When he starts having the reverse sneeze, all I do is rub under his chin in the throat area and it goes away.
So I just called my vet's office and spoke to one of their animal technicians... She said that it doesn't sound like kennel cough because my dog does not have a persistent cough. What she thinks is that it may be irritation in the throat from over exertion at daycare. She says she takes one of her dogs to daycare every once in a while - they play all day and run around and bark at each other and generally exhaust themselves. She says that hair and dust gets kicked up in the air and gets into the throat. She compared it to how we feel after going to something like a concert - after yelling and dancing and breathing in smoke and generally over exerting ourselves, how does a person's throat feel after that? I kinda makes sense to me....??? Well, anyway. I will keep an eye on her to see if the cough sticks around or gets worse. I am taking the 10 week old to the vet on Saturday already, so I won't worry too much about him. Thanks everyone!
When I got my puppy at about 3 months she had kennel cough, and she would cough alot more than your dog and she also coughed up mucus. YOur dog does not cough up anything, so it may not be kennel cough.
