This is a long story, but please bear with me. It's worth the read.
I work with my local humane society and have a small rescue group of my own. A family member of mine told me about an abandoned german shepherd and puppy. They were going to kill them if we couldn't do something.
Me and my mom went to look at them. They were pitiful and were feral acting. It was obvious the mother had been badly abused and the puppy was born wild. They were extremely malnourished. The worst I have ever seen considering they could still walk and run. The mother would eat food if I threw it her way, but would not let me touch her. The puppy would only hide and growl.
After a couple of days the mother would smell my hands and eat food near me, but the worst part of this story is the neighbor. The first day the mother would take food from my hands the neighbor came over and started running his mouth. He started screaming that he was going to kill the dogs. We told him we were from the humane society and we were trying to catch them. He told us that this was our fault and the mother dog tried to attack him. My uncle spoke up and told him I was just feeding the dog from my hands. This shut him up and we haven't heard from him since. The worst part is when the neighbor came over his dog did too. It was a boxer bulldog and we could see every bone in it's body. The dog wanted to be friendly to us, but the man just kept screaming at him. It was terrible.
Anyway, I know you guys want some good news. We still haven't been able to remove the dogs, but I am making good progress. It's been a couple of weeks and I can now pet the mother all over her body and the puppy will play near me. The pup still won't let me touch it, but it is only a matter of time. I've been working on putting a collar on the mother. The mother also lets my cousin pet her now.
I will keep you guys updated and for those of you who pray, they're worth it. Any advice is welcome and thank you for listening to my story.
I just went to feed her. I still can't put the collar on her. The puppy came about three inches from my hand. I think it is a girl. They have both gained a lot of weight and look much healthier. I will try to take some pictures of them. Is there someone I can contact about the boxer on a state level? I live in Evans County, GA. We have no animal laws, but I know there are state animal cruelty laws. Any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.
You're a great person for giving these dogs a chance. Not everyone would take the time and effort to try to help a completely feral puppy and its mother to act nicely around humans. Good for you and I hope to hear more news from you! Seems like you're making some good progess though. At least your neighbor doesn't bother you anymore, so that's an improvement.
Have you thought of trapping them and continuing this progress in a safer enviroment? I would be scared that the neighbor might still kill them......or someone else. Most shelters or H.S.'s have live traps that you may be able to use. I also think that the progress you are making will go much faster if you could br around them more often.
Since you work with the Humane Society, I would recommend using a big cage to try and trap one of the dogs.. if not both. I know it sounds mean, but atleast you would be able to catch them and finally give them the proper care they need. It seems liek they're starting to trust you though.. so keep at what your doing if all else fails.
