I live in an apartment and want to get a dog. My neighbors are VERY picky about noise. so i NEED a dog that will not bark. I also would like to have it paper trained. since I'm in the apartment my landlord really does not want the dog going outside all the time. I am willing to train the dog and it will be a very loved dog I can guarntee. I am just not sure what breed of dog is small, quiet, a lap-dog and can be paper trained. I am ok with a girly dog. but my boyfriend would like a more male dog but we would like suggestions for both. SO please help it is greatly appreciated.
I have a shih tzu she only barks when she hears the door bell ring. She does not shed and she weighs 11 lbs. My best friend also has a shih tzu and he is paper trained. They both play but mostly just lay around and sleep. You just have to pay $$$ to get them groomed monthly.
I am going to say a female pug and I'll tell you why. They are small, you won't have to get her hair cut, she will shed though, a female will be smaller, a pugs bark is more muffled then a poodle or a shih tzu or any of the smaller breeds, if it barks, her exercise requirements are minimal,You can carry them in and out of the building, if you don't let them get fat, and they are darn cute. And are usually very friendly.A French Bulldog would be compareable as well, but not as easy to find.
I think a chihuahua would be perfect! My chihuahua's do not bark unless they hear the doorbell and even then it is a low growl and once I get up the are waggin their tail waiting to see who is at the door. Plus they are litterbox trained! You can always take your dogs on walks so they get to go outside. Then just have a litterbox for the house!
I would like to suggest against getting a Chihuahua or any Chihuahua hybrid.. they are tempermental dogs, and screech (bark) constantly. They are very much a one person dog as well. On another note... I have a peke-a-poo and she is absolutely the sweetest dog EVER. The lady I got her from, she actually has a litter of shihpoos..
Halosfire though I doubt if you will be on here again that is a bunch of crap what you say about chihuahua's. Obviously you never owned one! I hate it when people judge a dog on what others have told them or what they think the dog is supposed to be like. My chi's do not bark they are not noisy they are good dogs and do not growl at anyone they like everyone that comes in the door. Some chi's are protective of their master. That all depends on how you raise them. Bring them around lots of people and they get used to others. My chi has not even been around alot of people and she loves everyone. So it all depends on how you raise your dog. That is like saying all pit bulls are bad dogs. Nope not the dog it is the owner and how they want the dog to be trained. If a dog does bark constantly which I am yet to find a chi that does you can also train them out of it.
Also Halosfire sounds to me like your just trying to sell your mutts on here since you know breeding two different dogs to make another is not the best thing to do. You can never guarantee what the puppy is going to be more like out of the two breeds as far as temperment. Way to make a sale hey? Sorry I hate it when people do not follow the rules and NO ADVERTISING!

LoL, perhaps you're the tempermental one instead. It's proven that a Chihuahuas personality is protective and it's very much a one person dog. Period.. no arguing it. I'm not selling any dogs, the lady is very pleasant to do business with. She isn't even advertising her dogs yet.. they're too young. I don't profit from any sales, I know her strictly through business. There was no reason to get so... snippy.
My chihuahuas are awesome dogs. They only bark when someone comes to the door, and as soon as they know it is OK they are quiet. They are friendly and love to play. It really is all in how you raise them. They love giving kisses. They run all around and play and then just plop in my lap and snuggle in for a belly rub, and there they stay all content and happy. They are pee pad trained. you can buy these pads to use for inside the house instead of a little box ( just another alternative, I found the litter pellets were kind of hard for them to walk on). They absolutely love giving kisses and getting attention. And do not need lots of room. I'd give two thumbs up for an apartment dog. Just my two cents.
Thanks everyone for sticking up for the chihuahua's!
Halosfire Sorry if I sounded "snippy" but on this forum we don't really like people judging a certain dog just because of what some people say the dog is like. That is like I said before. It would be like saying a pit bull is a mean dog because of some people fighting them all the time and giving them a bad name. Just is not always true what you hear about a dog.
I also got upset because it is disrespectful to others on this forum for you to go and post and give out your number or your "friends" number for some mutt dogs when you know if you post it says no advertising! There are a lot of great breeders on this site that I would love to see the dogs they have for sale. Yet we cant because those are the rules.
Plus it is hard to get your point across in writing. I did not mean to be rude. I was just amazed at the way you could easily cut on a dog and then suggest another dog that you wont even know about the temperment since it is a mix!
i don't want to start nothing, but i to have a chi, and i agree with what holidayzbliss said, chi are great dogs all dogs bark. except for the people who went to the vet and took their little voice box out . i find that to be very crule to dogs so please don't do that to your dog.if you want a apt.size dog ,he should be a small dog. chi doesn't require much exercise.now i know someone is going to comment on removing the voice box so the animal dont bark, well fine if you do but when i last was at the vet ,this dog could hardley bark i ask the lady what happen to his voice she told me oh,i had it remove b/c we live in a apt,and this way hecan't keep up much noise ,i wanted to tell her why did'nt you remove your's while you was having his did . now repect my o/p. this his how i feel .
Wow, this is the second incidence I have heard of of owners removing their voice box. Gees that seems so cruel. I cant believe vets will actually do this. Is this a common thing....wow Im amazed at what people will do!!
