My boyfriend's dachsund has diabetes, and has had a diabetic attack. but i'm not sure what happened before she had one, and now she can't move her backlegs. Is this a sign for an other attack, or is it something else that dachsunds are prone too?
Dox can have major back problems. You dog should be taken to the vet immediately. It could loose function of its legs the long you wait. I am not sure about the diabetes with dogs, but any problem that involves loss of mobility should be handled by a professional.
Here's a site with some good information on diabetes in dogs. http://www.cah.com/library/diabetesdogs.html If the dog isn't spayed, you *really* need to do so. The only place I know to get the wheelchairs for dogs is the ads posted in the back of Dog World and Dog Fancy magazines. I found some links to websites for some cartmakers at www.k9cart.com www.handicappedpets.com www.doggon.com www.petswithdisabilities.org
thanks for the replies...but sadly my bf's mom had to decide to put her down. she had lost controll of herself(couldn't help going potty in the house) and they just didn't have the money to take her to a specialist. the vet thinks that she had a tumor on her spine or in her spine, their not sure. They have another dog, Max that has grown up with molly (the dachshund). i was wondering, should they consider getting another dog for max? he's round 2 or 3, and he is really upset about losing molly. i think she was like a sister to him.
Oh, that is sooooo sad. I would let the dog mourn for a bit. Yes, animals grieve. There is no way to 'replace' the dog in the other dog's eyes. After a month or two if she feels the same then start looking for another dog. I am so sorry.
i'm sorry to hear about your dog. I don't jnow anything about dogs and diabetes but i have diabetes and your dog always peeing would mean that it's blood sugar level is high. The way to get it down (without insulin injections) is to exercise. I know it's a little late to tell you but I thought i'd tell you any ways.
supermommy, i know that a dog can never be replaced by any dog. i didn't mean to get another dog right away, but some time in the near future like in a couple months or more. Molly was a wonderful dog, and had she been mine i would have excersised her more, but she was my bf's family's dog, and his brothers are on the lazy side. does anyone have any websites for rescues of small dogs? i'll be searching on my own, but i thought i might ask you people too. thanks! :)
www.petfinder.com. Type in the breed and your location. There will be pure bred and mixed dogs. There are probably more resources for adoptable pet than you are aware of. This will give you a good starting point.
