Any ideas why my dog eats my cats crap? it is so disgusting especially when she comes to lick my face after having a buffet in the litter box. She also humps my cat. I think that is a sign of dominence. I feel bad for my cat because all I hear is this loud "MEOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWW" while Lexus is going to town on her. Good thing Deja is declawed or else Lexus would be injured.
Ask your vet. They sell some stuff that you put on your dogs food.. then when it eats poop, it gives the dog a horrible taste in it's mouth. It will eventually stop doing this. As for the humping.. I can't help you there. It's nature. LoL.
We're going to put our cat box in a closet with a cat door in it so that the dog can't get to it (or the kids..haha). For now, it's in the bathroom down the hall and we just make sure the dog never goes back there.
Why don't you buy a self cleaning litter box? It has a sensor and it will sweep the poop into a covered receptacle. The receptacle is disposable and it actually seals away the poop. You kill two birds with one stone. You don't have to rake the litter box anymore and your dog won't be eating nasty cat poop. You can also put meat tenderizer in your cat's food. It will make the poop taste really bad that the dog won't eat it anymore. You can also purchase Forbid at your vet's office. You can sprinkle it on your cat's food. Here is the link for the self cleaning litter box. Buy it from Wal-Mart because it is under $100 there .... PetsMart will charge you $160 for the same thing. http://www.littermaid.com/showproducts.asp

Nothing like coprophagy!!! Some schools of thought claim its an enzyme deficiency...in humans. The "enzyme responsible" has never been explained articulately or absolutely in lay terms to me. My old, beloved Rottweiler ate cat feces as a snack...wish I could have sent him away.
Put the litter box in garage, cat door..not accessible by a 120lb crap eater. He lost interest over time and it was only a true problem till he was maybe 2 or 2 1/2 years old. I thought feces were bad until he decided to roll in the decaying guts of decomposing sea mammals on a fairly regular basis..that went on till he went to heaven or a malodorous limbo/hell much too young!!
My bathroom is on the small side and I decided that I would rather not be next to kitty litter while I get ready, take a bath etc...
That is my only sanctuary in my whole house away from everyone.
So instead, I put the covered kitty litter in a large spare closet we have in the hallway. I make sure the door is not shut tight so the cat opens it with his paw. I also put the baby gate in the closets doorway so the dogs can't get in after the cat is done, when we walk by we just shut the door slightly when we notice it open a little.
It has worked since I have lived here, over a year.
it has something to do with the fact that the makeup of cat food is different and more aromatic. cats dont absorb as much when they eat, so they pass alot of that thru. thus, to a dog, the poo smells better. since we know thay eat based mostly on smell not taste...they smell the undigested food in the poo adn think its yummy. put a bowl of dog food and a bowl of cat food down, see which one your dog eats first. my eskie would eat the poo, and the cat food, given the chance. we put a kitty door into the basement door and problem solved.
i think the cat food is higher in fats...or maybe proteins...whatever it is it makes it seem (and the resulting poo seem) like a great treat.
you can get the pills from your vet .mix in with his food , and he will stop eating poop, they work really good but keep the pills. don't get rid of them, b/c he might start it up again .due to his diet.teacup had stop for about 2mo then the other day i caught him eating his poop again so i went back to the pills this morning i woke up and the poop still on his wee wee pad. i change his food so i know it was cause by that ,second question ? can't help you b/c teacup humps on ms.pooky his stuff bear. lol...........understand eating poop means lacking something in they diet,
Nobody knows why it is done for sure. The "lacking something in their diet" is theory..... If that were true, more than half of the nations dogs must all be malnourished because damn near most of them like to snack on a cat turd given the opportunity.
My vet won't even back that statement up.
I believe what Eskie said to be true, my dogs also chow down on cat food if they can get ahold of it.....

Hey everyone.....I'm new to this forum.....I have a 1year old Shitzu who also eats her own crap too! I inherited her last year when my sister suddenly passed away. "Lola" was only 5 weeks old when my sister got her and only had her for 2 days when she passed. My sister had been deceased for approx 13 hours when I found her, and Lola had been without food or water for that long period of time. So, her survival depended on eating her own feces and urine....1 year later she still does this.....AND she pees on the beds if we don't shut the doors when we leave!! So, I'm feelin ya on those nasty "kisses"! :) I've tried "forbid" and "detour" and everything I could to stop this nasty habit....nothing so far has worked!! any more ideas would be great!!...I KNOW my sis is in heaven laughing at me deal with this "fur ball"!!!!! :) -Donna

maybe true, but my vet is the one who told me it was his diet. and to give him the pills so i did and it work. the other day when i gave him three different snacks at different time. i notice then he started eating his poop,i started him back on the pills and notice this morning when i got up his poop was still on his wee wee pad. some things work different' on certain dogs.it might be a theory but the pills work for me.
hello and welcome all new members...sorry to have to meet over such a ...gross topic...lol...but...what the heck...we all know it happens...
I put my litter box for the first floor in the master bath closet...and when we had Topper alive...he was nororious poop eater... but...so far...cat poop is safe
But i do have a litter of pups who eat there own or each others poop and of all my years i have not ever had this happen...and what made matters worse...for a couple weeks they had soft then runny poop...as if it coulnt get any grosser...i bought the derur stuff...and didnt get them eating it long enough to see if it worked...i stoped it thinking it might have aided the runs...and trying to eliminate it..i stoped everything...
i dont think they lack something...my vet says pups are curious...and try everything...just like babies...meat tenderiser she recomended...but...untl i see turds for a long time im not going to switch any thing up to wreck my progress...
Poo eaters here too!I did not read all the post.I'm in a hurry,so someone prolly said this.Try meat tenderizer.I've been useing it for a week now and it seems to be helping.Roscoe eats the cats poo and his own.He was getting the runs which was making a big mess for me.Sprinkle a little meat tend.... on the cats food. Our vet said it won't hurt them.
