Now I don't dress my dogs up for the fun of it all year round. They're not exactly dress up kind of dogs. But being Chihuahuas, in the winter, they do need sweaters. I prefer to make my own sweaters for them. I picked out some matching fabric for them, blue leapord print for Toby, pink for Pearl, and purple for Baby Wawi. And my Pom, Fran doesn't need a coat. So how many others are crafty, or try to be (like me.)

Sewing is a talent I would like to have! I don't sew, but I do use children's clothing. Manson gets chilly with that short fur. My hubby just hates it when I put a shirt on him though. Says he looks like a pansy!
lmao @ shiny ! lol. i bought some cute little doggie t-shirts at walmart. when i put them on my two frenchies, they just sat there like statues. i guess they thought i put them in straightjackets ! lol . i wasnt really happy anyway with the way they fit. my frenchies have big heads and necks. my male only weighs 24 pounds, but he has a 16 inch neck ! and the shirts where really loose around the necks. they looked kind of funny. i think if i get them any more clothes, i will try sweaters. hopefully they will fit a little more snugger .
Lol, yeah, I use to cut up my daughter's newborn clothes (the funky one's, I give away the good stuff.) I can't really sew either, but I like to try. The dogs aren't fond of clothes, but they need it if they want to go outside. The biggest problem I had was getting the measurements right so my male wouldn't pee on himslef.
I am not a talented seamstress in fact my sewing skills are very limited. But I bought one sweater from walmart and made a pattern. You just trace out the sweater. If you use baby clothes the arm holes are on the wrong spot. I bought baby fleece blankets at wal-mart for $1 each. You don't have to sew the edges of the fleece but you can if you want with a very easy blanket stitch. You can easily make dog ponchos. Very easy to make and comfortable on dogs because they are not restricting. You can fringe the edges too for a cute look. Here is a picture of what it will look like. http://froogle.google.com/froogle_cluster?q=poncho+for+dogs&pid=4842810831545324183&oid=12104624145611265673&btnG=Search+Froogle&scoring=p
I have a chihuahua who also needs sweaters and stuff for the winter. Unfortunately ,I cannot sew :( Ive been hounding member of the board to make Ace a coat with no luck lol. He is a 'big' chihuahua and is long so sweaters and coats at petsmart dont work for him
Acey, try my idea no sewing necessary. I am sure you have seen fleece blankets that were not sewn on the edges. They fringe them and tie a knot. It would look cute for a ponchol If you really cannot sew use binding tape. Can you iron? All you need is a pencil and trace the sweater on to a piece of paper. If you cannot do it I will be willing to make you a poncho. Ponchos are good because you don't have to slip their legs into any holes.
Good job! I am glad my idea helped someone. You do have to sew the middle but it is soooo easy. For the none-sewers use binding tape but it adds to the cost. You can put an applique on the top of the poncho too. They have a pink poodle applique at wal-mart and I am sure you can find some cute ones online.
dgsichipom, That is really a cute idea. Im going to try it!! I have seen those blankets before. When I finish I will post a picture...it probably wont be until Friday or so before I go get some fleece. Thanks for the idea!
Edit: i can sew a little, Id be able to do the neck, Im sure. Im just not talented enough to knit sweaters or anything :) The poncho idea is so cute though I am def. going to try it! I want to make one for my bf's sister's puppy, too...if I am good at it.

Last time I tried to sew I almost had a nervous break-down. Don't have the patience for sewing. My little one sleeps in pjs. She gets cold at night so I bought her some little pink ones with bears on them. She loves them because we keep our bedroom pretty cool at nite even in the winter. They all have sweaters and little teeshirts. I am going to buy Max a Dallas Cowboy Teeshirt for Thanksgiving.
I make Maggie harness dresses....she has a great collection! I've just finished another two the other night. I call it her "fall collection" :) They attach by velcro under her neck and belly so they don't cause any strain on her little neck when we are walking. I get a lot of comments on her dresses. I tell people they are harnesses that just happen to be in the shape of a dress. Only crazy people dress their dogs lol http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b122/Keesha63/Maggieinadressharness.jpg
