My 6 week pregnant bitch is recovering from a mild case of the new dog flu. Her cough and nose have mostly cleared up but she still won't eat very much. She refuses all dog foods canned dry and semi-moist. She won't eat any Diary products except some commercially prepared pudding. I have managed to get her to eat cooked chicken livers and Canine Carry outs a semi moist dog treat. If she thinks I'm trying to get her to eat, she refuses even my dinner. She will eat bread sometimes. I'm sullpimenting her with potent vitamins, but I'm at my wit's end. We managed to save the pups and I hate to lose them due to low birth weight after all this effort HELP!!!!!
Keep in mind that some of them will simply go off their food while pregnant, as well. One of my friend's girls will scare you to death every single time by not eating much at all. Also, I do know that if I take vitamins that sometimes they make me sick at my stomach, so - that could be an issue as well. You might try not giving the vitamins for just a couple of days to see if that might let her stomach settle so that she could eat. Poor thing, sounds like she feels pretty bad.
ADD Red's right, you could force feed her. You can mix up pulverized dry and canned and shape it into a sausage shape and stuff it down. There are some that need this sometimes. I'd ask my vet what they thought.

I recently had a puppy that wouldn't eat. So I used canned baby food-chicken and noodles-step 2 and it worked really well. Even though it can be addicting and can increase the sodium content in the blood, you can always supplement with nutrical. I personally don't think I would feed anything that is raw to a pregnant dog-or at least that is what I have been advised, but cooking it would be a good treat. I had one mother that wouldn't eat when she got to the end of her pregnancy-so I made her an omlet with eggs-cheese, ham and she loved it.
Thanks for the advice. I am having to force feed her, what i didn't mention is that she will not eat anything and if she does, just a bite and then walks off disinteresred. I am making allkinds of crazy concoctions, but my base is chicken livers, cottage cheese and canned dog food. Rottie person, yes I have no qualms aboyt force feeding her, I have to get food down her. I'm using a turkey baster but if you have an idea let me know!
