All of my dogs and cats on currently on Advantix and I am not seeing ticks on them. My problem is I have ticks in the yard. When I cut the grass I find them on me and when my daughter plays outside I have to check her over well for ticks and always find a few. I used to use Diazinon but the EPA pulled it off the shelf because it is harmful to Bee's and other things. Does anyone have any other suggestions on what to use now. I have 3 3/4 acres so it needs to be a spray that I can use the hose with. Charlene
I haven't heard of a pesticide that kills bugs and not bees. I use a lawn spray weekly in the summer to conquer mosquitos. My kids will be eaten alive if I don't. Unfortunately it also is harmful to bees, butterflies, etc. If you really only want to kill the ticks try buying a chicken coop and a dozen chickens.
I have found Diazinon granules still at Walmart of all places. It's sold in the lawn and garden section in a bright red bag, I think it's called 'Eliminate' or something like that. If it's been pulled on a state to state basis, I've also found that Ortho Bug Be Gone works pretty well, we used the ready spray you hook up the garden hose. You just have to let the lawn dry completely before letting pets or barefeet out on it but I live on the edge of the woods and it does work.
I have seen the "Elimate" on the shelf at wal-mart but didnt know it was Diazinon. From what the EPA states it pulled the Deazinon because it was harmful to honey bee's. I hate all bugs and when I was using Diazinon I never had a problem with any kind of bugs. I have been to Lowes, Home Depot, and Southern States and they all tell me the same thing. Thanks for telling me about the "Eliminate" I will be buying some asap. Thanks, Charlene
My dogs are on Advantix also, but I always treat my yard with Seven Dust. You can either use the powder or the spray. Works great, and you don't have to keep the pets off of it. That's why I chose that one. Also, I found out a few years back that ticks breed in ivy. My neighbor has quite a bit and sometimes it comes over the fence. So, that is where I start with my spray.
I buy a spray product made by Cutter. It has to be applies atleast once a week during the summer or it will wash away. It repels mosquitoes, fleas, ants, roaches, etc. I don't think it works on ticks though.
There is a product called "Mosquito Barier" that is supposed to work well on ticks too. We have ordered a gallon of the stuff for our acre and a half and that is supposed to last all season for both ticks and mosquitos. It is made of garlic so it isn't harmful to dogs or kids, and won't kill every living thing in your yard.
We spread copper sulfate crystals/pellets (you can get it at Tractor Supply or your local feed store) to conquer the mosquitos; it also works on ticks, I have read. You can put it in a hand spreader if you have a small yard/area, or it can go in a big spreader. As for spray for people to keep the ticks off, we use either OFF! or Cutter brand Deep Woods formula. We have 5 acres of fields/woods, and that's the only formula that works aroubd here. Hope this helps.
