I went to the store to get some dog snacks to train and reward my puppy. I bought the Milk Bones dog treats that say they're for training. they've got a Maltese on the cover but the treats are too big.
Can I give an 8-week old puppy string cheese? Are those grocery store dog treats ok for puppies? What if I were to get the Pup-peroni sticks and cut them into little pieces?
I give my dogs animal crackers for treats. I get big containers of them at Sam's Club for CHEAP. They are totally healthy, safe for dogs, low-fat, and have a sweet taste that my dogs love. Plus, they can be broken into small pieces.
I had the same problem when looking for treats for my new puppy a Bichon/Pomeranina mix. She's only 4lbs at 5 months old. I found the easist thing to do is to buy soft/chewy treats and break them up into bit size treats for the tiny pup. Also when you're dog is over 6 months I know Greenies have special toy and small dog treats.
For my Min Pins, I get Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice sticks and break them into raisin size pieces. I also use Charlee Bear dog treat, the cheese & egg flavor (they have only 3 calories each). I would get a dog treat and break it into small pieces. You have to watch you don't give your toy dog too much because it is easy for them to gain too much weight. Adjust your food level accounting for the treats you give.
My vet told me and this may be true for you too that I should stay away from beef, liver and any treat or food with high fat content. Small dogs are more prone to pancreatitis (sp?) with high fat diets. He said to stick with lamb, chicken and turkey. He said a little cheese was okay sometimes but not very often. He also said to stay away from people food but that if we must that white turkey, chicken (both with absolutely no skin) and some popcorn but with no butter would be okay.
Absolutely, no hot dogs and no pig's ears for the little dogs.
We were having a problem with Georgie screaming like she was in pain periodically and she has not done that since we stayed away from things like Pupperoni and Snausages.
I give my guys old mother hubbards "p nuttier" treats (mini biscuits) they love them. I also bought the 5lb assotment from old mother hubbard, they eat them, but I think they only eat them so the other doesn't get it! What the heck is a charcoal biscuit good for? LOL
