I have had dobies almost my entire life, but now I have a Pip the Border Terrier who is truly the love of my life. He is my first terrier, and even after 3 years it's culture shock with some of the things that he does, nothing like my mellow, big red male dobies. I have a couple of questions for people who have a lot of experience with terriers.
1) Do they EVER develop an "off" button? We take him on runs in the woods everyday, he runs with the mountain bike on the weekends, and he goes to daycare everyday....he still is ALWAYS in high gear. He's 3 years old now...will he ever slow down?
2) It's his mission in life to roll in the nastiest stuff that he can find...be it poop, dead skunks, or anything else that smells horrible. I've had dogs that will roll once in a while, but this is truly Pip's greatest pleasure in life...is it a terrier thing? What does it mean?

EEEEEWWWW One of my bassets had a poo eating thing.I've never heard of rolling in it.Boy that makes for one stinky dog. I live on a lake so mine have a thing for dead fish. They roll in it.It will make you sick.Flash spent her first night outside last night cause she would not come in and take a bath. She better be glad it is too cold outside or I would have hosed her down. She getting one tonight come h*** or high water!!!!!!!
Nope just terriers, my friend's labrador retriever did that, and still does if she can get into it (not veyr often). The last time she did it was at a soccer game. Kirsten and I took her for a walk, she got into poop, and smelled the entire time. Not to mention she jumped all over poor Kirsten too. lol....-sigh- dogs will be dogs.
Pip thinks bath is a swear word...he always looks so dejected after one. But he has to get cleaned up so often that I think I should by stock in the shampoo company. He's such a funny little man, I just look at him sometimes and shake my head, but I wouldn't change anything about him...even though he does drive me absolutely insane sometimes.
Oh yeah..Havanese do it to. Sophie likes to roll in duck poop. We go for a walk by the river almost every night and she likes to chase the ducks into the river (she is on a 16 ft leash) then quick as a flash she'll try to roll in the poop, sooo gross! Also likes dead worms and other dead bugs.
I fostered a poodle mix over a year ago who not only rolled in poop - he wasn't done until it was smeared all over his face. Sometimes I had to bath him twice in one day.
The worst time was when we had a house full of company, I can't even remember why, but everyone thought he was so cute. I let him out in the yard to "do his business" and called him in 15 minutes later. He had poop all over both sides of his face. He ran into the house and jumped on everyone he could in 30 seconds. Of course he wanted to lick everyone too! It was disgusting and a bit embarassing. I had to leave the party to go get him clean. It was in the kennel until the guests(now smelly) were gone. What a character he was!
Ok, this is really disgusting, but...Maggie doesn't roll in poop. No, it's even worse......she eats horse poop!!! We live next to a horse pasture, and if she gets half a chance, she's down there running. If we see her stop, we know what she's doing!
Oh my gosh, your guy's stories are hillarious! teacuphouse, teacup does that? My dogs are too prissy to do anything like that. Oh...but they do eat baby poop! Ugh, they would get ahold of my daughter's diapers when she was younger and go at it. And I've been potty training her since about 20 months (she 26 months now)...she's a hippy and is naked all the time. So she'd poo on the floor, and they'd eat it before I could pick it up. Gross.
Well, I guess my little man isn't such a freak afterall....looks like poop is a delicacy.
I still have the terrier question, does anyone have feedback on when they start to calm down a little (or where there "off" button is)...my guy is 3 years old now and he's like the energizer bunny...just keeps going. He goes to daycare everyday, we go on marathon walks, we play every night....and he still annoys the other dogs by trying to get them to play way after what they feel bedtime should be.
LOL, my dog loved Hadeda (Ibis) poop! The bird droppings are bigger (and sloppier) than regular bird poop. They eat snails and all sorts of creepy crawlies. He'd roll in it and he must have thought this was an irrisistable 'manly' aroma. EEEEwwww!
My puppy has a thing with getting the toilet paper out of the bathroom trashcan.. chewing it up.. and scattering it all around the house. She also eats onions, and she LOVES to stick her tongue up your nose. It jars you sometimes. lololol.
I grew up with terriers. They loved to roll in fox poo any thing that smelled; The vet told us it was essential for terriers as they were used for ratting or foxing so they needed to mask their own smell. The stronger smell dead skunk, dead fish Poo the better they masked their own smell and the better chance they had at catching their prey!
Well I have a Jack Russell Terrier and a Fox terrier, my JR is 9 1/2 years old and still thinks he is young, has never slowed down, he like a stagnant ditch across a field from us if he gets loose the is the first place he goes for and is so proud when he dives into it and comes out all black and stinky. They both will roll in poop we have to get it up as soon as they go.
They , in thier world are having fun, and terriers love fun.
