Just wondering what you guys felt about getting a dog that was free. There is a man who is giving his purebred rottie puppy away for free because the landlord said no pets.Do you guys feel it would be wrong to give the puppy a good home?Even with no papers or garuntees ?
Maybe you could take the dog with the condition that he be vet checked before your final decision. There is a person on this site..I think her name is Redye_rotties or something similar. I have found that she has a lot of good info on a variety of topisc. She breeds/shows rotties, I'm sure she could give you more specific info on questions you might ask the current owner.
I would get a free dog no problem. I have Chis and a Pom, and plan on getting my daughter a more kid frinedly dog, like lab or something. There's a local website that has lots of free dogs, with owners with various reasons. Of course you'd go over there and meet him and hopefully they have a vet record. It's not much different than getting a dog form the pound. They don't have papers or health gurantees, just a 45 dollar adoption fee.
I'm sure it is taking a chance unless they will give you an okay from the vet. But, then on the other hand a person that would give away a dog to someone they didn't know is too. The dog could be going to a bad home.
Yeah I dont believe you should give your pets away unless your personally know the person and he/she takes good care of her/his pets.Where I live its dangerous to give away pitbulls free, because of fighting.
I think as long as you screen where the pups are going. I think a good home should come before price. If the landlord said no, or if BSL is in play then alot of times the dogs life depends on getting out of that home asap. Hopefully the people that are giving away their dog will want a good home only. Shelters don't have a whole lot of luck with rotties, they are a great dog but not highly sought after. I would say take it, at least you would know that it was going to a good home even if you rehomed it yourself.
we gave our cats away when we moved to new zealand and we didnt charge for them because its like seeling a family member. Now i've moved back im not allowed my baby back and i dont get to see her either =(
Yes, I would take an animal for free without papers and guarantees. I already did. I have a female American Eskimo that someone gave me for free. I answered an ad in a pet supplies store. She is purebred (I saw the parents) but the lady didn't give me the papers. I accepted that she came without papers because they don't really matter to me. She was already 8 months old and not housetrained. She did not have shots and is not spayed. She doesn't seem to have been socialized and is extremely afraid of everybody but my immediate family. I have been working with her since I got her. I immediately got her vet checked and shots. The spay is going to come when she is totally housetrained since she was soiling her crate and laying in it. I didn't want her to get infection in her surgery site. She is doing great with the housebreaking now...only accidents when WE wait to long to let her out. I think she would be ok to spay now. She still does not CHOOSE to let people pet her. She runs and barks at them from a distance. If I hold her and let someone pet her, I feel her little heart racing but she puts her head down and lets them pet her. Everybody thinks she is such a sweetheart.
I think if you take the rottie puppy, you will be fine as long as you are familiar with the breed and give him the proper training as a pup. You don't need papers unless you were planning to show or breed. Why do you need a guarantee if the puppy is free? You aren't going to get your money back. Take the puppy to the vet and have his health checked out to make sure he's disease free. I really don't think adopting a free dog is a bad thing. You might even save him from a bad life. My puppy was going to be used to breed for selling puppies to the Amish. I feel I saved her from that kind of life. You will be fine! Make sure to post pics if you get the puppy!
I love getting pets for free because I can then look for a good home for them. I am always on the lookout to get any dogs I can for free. I tell my acquaintences that if they don't want their dogs to give them to me to find them a good home. I have gotten a few dogs like that and I help place them in a suitable home for them.
I even go through local penny saver mazaginez and newspapers that might have adds for free dogs.
I run a small rescue group and have given animals away for free before. It's hard to adopt certain breeds so I try to be lenient about making people pay fees for dogs that haven't had any vet care. I usually charge a fee if I don't know the person. As long as you are willing to care for and love the dog I don't see a problem with it. This dog probably doesn't stand much of a chance if someone won't take it. It's hard to charge money in that situation. The dog's life basically depends on it finding a home fast. You should definetly take it. If it makes you feel bad, give the man $50 and call it even. If you believe this dog needs you, get it.
Thanks guys for your advice. We are thinking about the rottie pup.It has probably found a home already tho.I think I will call anyway tho.I know about the breed.i have owned one before.Eskie I wish you good luck with your pup.
Everyone knows I love my Dobes!!! but hands down, the best dogs I ever owned are 2 pit-chow mixes, given to me for the same reason....landlord told previous owners they had to go. Dixie is gong to be 15 in Dec. and her sire, Hooch was put down August 20,2005 at the ripe and wonderful age of 16. I was say that Dixie has been the perfect dog, never destroyed things, housebroke like a dream and the best companion I ever had. Hooch passed these qualities on to her. Please take the dog, in my case it was the best thing I could have done...for all 3 of us. Best of luck.
