Hi all. Well, Bandit came home finally at 1:00 this morning. We're in the middle of moving to another house and I stayed behind last night waiting for him. The only furniture left downstairs is an old couch in the living room. I just laid down there yesterday evening and waited with the whole house dark and the back porch light on. At 1:00 he came running to the back door and I was just elated to see him. He came running in with such a purpose and he was crying. He was so hyper and meowing over and over and over. I've never seen him like that before. He didn't try to go back out again and today he is locked up safely until I can get off work and go back home. I'm moving him over to the new house tonight so there won't be any chance of losing him again before we move. I'm soooooo relieved. Thanks for all of your encouraging advice.
Sooo happy to hear your cat came back. I lost my 16 yr old Blue Persian last summer for 3 days. Zeke has always been in inside cat but made a quick exit and snuck out the door one night when it was accidentally left open for a few minutes (opportunist). Besides his age he also has very severe hip dysplasia. Actually at 4 the vet was questioning me if he actually can walk! Assuming due to his hip dysplasia he could not have gone far we went door to door for three blocks in each direction handing out flyers and asking people to open up there garages and sheds in case he got accidently locked in. Three days later the neighbour mentions that she is sure she keeps hearing a cat meowing..but can't figure out from where she says. When we went over and called him, we could hear this muffled noise that sounded like it was coming from under the floor. She assures us there is only one way in the crawl space and that was through a hatch under the kitchen table which hasn't been opened in 3 yrs. We helped move her table to take a look. There he was stinky, skinny and very frightened! Apparently it seems he had crawled under the neighbours porch and found an incrediably small opening in her foundation that had once been used for a dryer vent and fell into her empty crawl space which was only 5 feet high, but with no way to climb back out. He's fine now...tough old man! She was leaving the following day for two weeks. We were lucky lucky lucky :)
I'm so glad your cat came home. It gives me hope because my house-cat got out sometime yesterday morning and I've been freaking out. I've had him for 5 years since he was 2 months old and he's never been outside. I'm looking forward to the 4 day weekend so I can spend my time looking for him because being at work knowing he's out there somewhere is really nerve-wracking.
I will try all the suggestions mentioned here and some others I've read, like spreading some of his used litter around the yard so he smells home. I've already got color flyers up around the neighborhood and he has an I.D. tag. We went out last night calling his name. I'll try again tonight but will take a bag of his food along to shake.
To make matters worse, I'm pregnant, so all this stress is not good for me.
For now, I will just hope for the best and pray that he doesn't stray far.
