Speaking of UKC shows, I just went to one in Kalamazoo, MI. I finally got to show my own dog instead of paying a handler!!!! Yeah! It was scary but fun. I may be showing in their last one in my area next weekend (LaPorte IN).
Yes, just go to www.ukc.org (I believe) and you can register your AKC dog with UKC as long as you have the pedigree info. It costs $28 for permanent registration.
Another advantage of UKC over AKC is that you don't have to pre-register weeks in advance to go to the shows. They allow same day registration as opposed to having to pre-register weeks in advance. That way if you make it, you make it, if not your not out the class $$.
You cna show akc. there are smaller shows located all over. We have one every summer at an old airport here and it is more casual than the bigger ones I have been too. the best thing to do would be to get involved with alocal breed club. Were are you located?

Redyre Rotties is very knowlegeable! I am starting in the dog show world after a lifetime of showing horses..With the price of gas, I can't afford to haul an 8 MPG rig around, so I started showing my Dobies, and the UKC is the perfect place to start. It's fun, fair (usually) and a great place to learn so you don't go to AKC shows and look like a geek! And the ribbons on the wall are a great selling point for puppies, it shows that you are interested in your dogs and not breeding just for the money. And as a bonus, you meet people who love dogs and are eager to help you...Good luck!
Some of these places may be able to help, http://www.barkbytes.com/sclubs/txclub.htm try googling towns by you and akc and something should pop up. I'm sure the akc has a list somewere but I don't knwo where. I always hear about it from someone.

I am excited about finally showing myself. It isn't really rewarding AT ALL, to just pay to have a handler do it. I have always shown horses, but I am rather shy so when my handler 'went off' on me for considering showing myself, I kind of let it go for nearly a year. Then a friend literally dragged me out there with one of my girls and it was SO fun. Scary but fun. I actually got to show of MY dog and it made me proud. Didn't win, placed near the bottom, but I didn't care (she was 6 years old with saggy boobs she was 3 years older than any other bitch out there). We had fun and it gave me experience for when I actually show one of my nicer looking dogs!
