My min. schnauzer just had a litter of puppies at 4:00 this evening and I had checked on her at 1:45 a.m and I was helping her get used to the puppies and we woke up at 2:45 and she had eaten one of the puppies. Is that normal?

It is not unusual for a mom to eat a dead pup. It’s nature's way of keeping the den clean. However, if she killed it and ate it, then that is definitely not normal.

She did!!!! She killed and ate it and just now tried to kill another one....What should I do?

You're going to just have to keep an eye out on her till the puppies are a day or two old.

I've always heard with motherly insinct an animal can tell if her offspring is sick.. if it is, they will eat it.

She had 4 puppies....Ate one and killed the other...Could it be because this is her first litter....or is it that they just were sick?

I don't have a lot of info, but until the people who have the most info come online, I would suggest you make sure her enviornment is a quiet as possible...it may be that she is a very nervous new mother and doesn't have good instincts about what she is supposed to do.

You should also get in contact with your vet, she might be having some health issues that you aren't aware of.

Like I said, there are people on the site who will be able to offer you great specific info....until then, watch her closely.

I can't say why they do it but I know it happens with poodles too, a breeder friend of mine has had a pups "disapear" from litters at different times. I have two girls from her from a litter that the mother ate one of the puppies. It's gross, hope my girls never do it!

I have never had any eat puppies that were alive, and most the time even if they die they kind of cast them to the side of the box. Watch her, you may have to take the puppies out and hand raise them. Just hold mom down so they can nurse (they need the colostrum), and then remove them. You will have a lot of work on your hands because then you will have to make them go poo and pee. I have a friend that hand raises all her pugs because they are notorius for smashing/squishing them when they are under 1 week. Sorry.

i have to say (and i want to prefas it with THANK GOD!!!!!!) of all the litters I have had I have not had that happen...i have heard of it...but...thankfully never experenced it...i would be so totally grossed out...the birthing experence grosses me out enough...that would push me over the edge...for me...if i did have one...id probably never breed it again...id just not risk it...if it is natures way of getting ailing pups out of the den...maybe it is a sign of a dog to not breed...or if it is excitability i say dont breed her again just for that reason...just my opinion mind you...

Dogs will kill and eat their puppies for all kinds of reasons.

A lot of times it is first time moms.

Sometime they do it an perpose and other time they do it accidently.

The accident ones happen when mom is tring to cut the embilicol cord and doesn't stop at the puppy.

Others are when they over groom which is way a lot of babies are hand raised at zoos. The mothers just won't stop grooming and they end up injuring or killing the babies.

This one guy kept calling the vet office because each day his rottie was doing something else to its puppies. It killed and ate some. The first one she ate the foot off.

Another guy I know also has rotties. He had one that would only raise 6 puppies if there was more then six she would kill them off until only 6 remained. He never did anything about just figured she was curing the litter and only keeping the best and only keeping what she know she could raise.

Other reasons mothers kill their babies is because they don't know what they are. They just see these little whinny things that sound like wounded prey so they kill them.

You will have to keep mom away from the puppies unless you are their to supervise. You may even have to hold her down well the puppies are nursing. She may grow to accept them or she may not.

My female just had puppies yesterday and she didn't seem to want anything to do with the first one she wouldn't stay in the whelping box with it. She didn't even care when I took it out and put it in another box.

Once all the puppies were born though she did change her tune. Though when we got home she did still grawl at them sometimes, but now everyone is content that is in the whelping box.

Your dog just might need your guidence at what to do for a little while until she figures it out. Or she could just not be mother matteral. Not all dogs are maternal just like people. If you look at wolfs not all the females breed. Some will never have puppies.

I just had a litter of pups from a first time mom and she chewed the cord to close and all the guts came out. I had to leave for 2 hrs and she didn't seem that close yet. I got home to a nightmare. 1 pup was cleaned and ok and the other was crying with it's guts hanging out all over, and it looked like mabey there was a piece of another one but I didn't want to look that close. I had to put the pup in the freezer so it didn't suffer anymore. My fault for not being home, but I had to leave to get my stepdaughter. she had 1 more so now I have 2 boys and she is being a very good mom!! I think she was just scared and didn't know what was happening . she tried to keep licking the cords to much so I put them on a heating pad until the cords dried and she was ok. I guess I wouldn't say it's normal but it can happen. Good luck with the pups.

How old is the mother dog? It could be she is too immature and that the puppies are making her nervous. Some dogs, just as some people, are not cut out to be parents. Just because they can produce offspring, doesn't mean they should.

Have you checked with her breeder, to see if they have had any problems with cannibalism?

The bitch should be kept in a quiet area of the home, away from high traffic and noise. Also, if you are pestering her too much, she may be killing her offspring, to keep them from harms way.

It is common in first time or young mothers to do this. Make sure she is in a secluded area of the house without people, other pets or alot of distraction. You will have to let the ONE person she trusts to keep a close eye on her. If too many family memebers come in and out looking in on her, they can tend to get nervous. The first 5 days or so are the worst for this.

If she still seems to want to hurt them, you will have to take them from her and only place them together at feeding time. This will require a box with a heating pad in it, the box should be large enough the pups can crawl off the pad if too hot. Every 2 hours, place the pups with mom, while you are there! have her lie still unitl each pup has a full stomache. If she will potty them on her own, then allow her to do it, if not you will need to use a warm. damp cloth and stimulate them to urinate and defecate. Remove them after the process is done, and in a couple hours, start all over, she may gain some confidence with them after the first week and be able to do more and more on her own and be trusted. You'll have to see how she progresses.

I have heard two reasons that cause this..

1. young inmature mom
2. over protective mom. They will eat their young to keep anyone from harming them..

Oh No! you can't put a muzzle on her ,and leave the room she would want to lick and clean her puppies. please don't do that .

Lots and lots of reasons. Sometimesthe puppies squeak and the mother sees them as prey, not children, and kills them. This is one of the many reasons why the maturity of hte bitch is so important. How old is she?


She will probably kill the entire litter if given time. You need to pull them and give htem supervised nrusing times only.
