Hi, What do matts exactly look like? and my German Shepherd used to wear a choke chain all the time untill his coat got very ruff. what was wrong with his hair? what do i do to make his coat nice again?
Buy a universal slicker brush. Starting at the base of his coat (on his legs) push the hair up with your hand. Use the brush to pull the hair back down. If the undercoat is really thick hold the hair and use the brush to pull the hair down away from your hand. This is hard to explain with out showing you. I would get a grooming book from the library.
or take the lazy way out call the groomer , to get those matts under control i wouldnt use a choke chain as a coller for any dog escpecially if they are chained . and brush them once a day i do with my saint bernard and she goes to the groomer once a month .
The reason his hair got so rough is because he had to grow stronger hair that would hold up againt a chain. It rubbed it all off so it came back thicker to protect it. Iwould go with a nylon collar from nowon. If he still needs the choke chain, use it only when he's walking or misbehaving while walking so it doesn't rub the skin so hard. I would disagree with supermonmmy, she used to groom! I will say if you do think there are mats (tangles), there are wide-toothed combs or flea combs that will help you detangle to a point, then you can work it with your fingers.
