patty duke played both parts. she played patty and her cousin cathy. just one girl. kind of like bewitched where elizabeth montgomery played samantha and her cousin serena. and i dream of jeannie, where barbara eden played jeannie and her sister. it was probably harder to do that with the patty duke show though. i used to watch that and remember this one? :
A horse is a horse, of course, of course, And no one can talk to a horse of course That is, of course, unless the horse is the famous Mister Ed.
Go right to the source and ask the horse He’ll give you the answer that you’ll endorse. He’s always on a steady course. Talk to Mister Ed.
People yakkity yak a streak and waste your time of day But Mr. Ed will never speak unless he has something to say
A horse is a horse, of course, of course, And this one’ll talk ‘til his voice is hoarse. You never heard of a talking horse?
Well listen to this: "I'm Mister Ed."
heres a cool site where you can get the lyrics for the old shows ! oh those were the days !
Lindap=== I called my grandparents mawmaw and pawpaw too. Isnt that funny you dont live in texas do you.I thought of them as my parents I loved there stories and there were so many. They got married in the depression and they never would throw anything away. The saved every thing.
And at meal time everyone sat at the table said grace and pawpaw would not allow the TV to be on and heaven forbid if you watched TV before Homework and Chores were done. And allowance what the hell is that I never got one. If you wanted to eat you better work.
Oh yes I remember candy for a penny .The world came to an end when gas went up to 75 cent .I remember every body in town was gripping about that.
And on Sat night we all had to watch Hee Haw with Dolly Parton and Porter Wagnor.I hated that show.
Oh does anybody ever remember getting their mouth watched out with soap. No days if you did that you would go to prison for that. But time I had the bad luck of my MawMaw hearing me say OH God .I mean all I said was God nothing else and I can still to this day remember her saying Sherri Ledan this hurts me worse than it hurts you but you can not take the lords name in vain, She washed my mouth out with soap. And from then on, I refered to God as the lord cause hell have no fury like Mawmaw.
And the Gardens they always had to have the biggest garden in the country and they refused to let anything go to waste. I hated picking peas.Still do.
oh yes gunsmoke and all those westerns like the Rifleman , Bononza, Big Valley, and the Lone Ranger my Pawpaw and me got to watch all those on Sunday afternoons .Cause back then nothing was open on Sunday remember ,Cause you were not suppose to work on Sunday.
I don't think I'm old, and I know I don't look old (still get asked what grade I'm in!). But, I do remember being a kid and being able to ride my bike outside and all the way around the block without a missing persons report being filed, my mom knew all the other moms on the block and their phone numbers. I also remember being held responsible for what I did, being forced to return to a friends house to pick up a mess I made, getting in trouble when my brother and I sold bugs to a neighbor kid so he could put them in his parents bed. Its sad, a lot of parents are so lazy now days. And, you just can't let your kids run free. I have friends with kids, some that would rather their kids sit and watch tv so they don't have to worry about where they are. My ex-best friend quit her job to "stay at home with the kids", aka to watch Dr. Phil! I suggested she do some crafts with her 4 year old that she pulled out of preschool, cuz she just didn't want to go one day. She said she didn't like doing stuff like that and just doesn't have the patience to sit with her. Hmmm? Her 11 year old dropped out of soccer because she would rather play with her friends than go to practice. Then she went and yelled at her coach and made fun of her former teammates. Four parents and the coach called my ex-friend to let her know. The 11 year old said she didn't do it...her punishment...sat in her room for an hour and got to stay up late that night! The 17 month old already knows that he can get whatever he wants by screaming...I just love those kids in restaurants!! This girl got pregnant when she was 15, I wouldn't be surprised if she were a gramma by 30. Its just sad, things were so different even 20 years ago when I was growing up. Remember home cooked meals too? When fast food was a treat (if you do your chores all week, on Saturday we'll go to McDonalds!), now McD's is dinner three nights a week?
And Holidayz, we just lost our last drive-in too! I'm so bummed!
Oh yes the drive in movies. MY kids didnt have a clue what I was talking about when I told them we were going to go to the drive in movies. They still have on in Grandbury Texas. It is 13 dollars a car load and you listen to the movie with a radio and you can bring you chairs and sit by the car or on the ground and watch two movies .Starts at dark. I love them.
doggie, cursing in our house was a no-no too. especially if we used the lords name. my dad was a preacher, still is. we got a few swats on the butt with his belt when we were bad. but out of five kids, none of us grew up to be druggies, drinkers or ever been in trouble with the law. i think nowadays with the cps stuff , we have lost some control over our kids. my mom told me when she was dating my dad, they had to take his brother with them as a chaperone. she said she cant stand my uncle dennis to this day because he was such a pest . now if a girl goes on a date with two guys, they consider her as a wild one ! lmao
I remember that dating stuff .My dad or mom would drive us places .I always hated that. Oh and if a girl called a guy back then .........Big no no ....And now days girls call my son all the time and act so bad and so cheap. Alot of kids no days never go to church .When we were growing up if something was going on at church you can bet we were there .I am sure you had it worse.
All my mom had to do was say that we were gonna get the belt when daddy got home. We also got soap and tabasco sauce in our mouths (still can't stand that stuff!). I got sent to my room and all my dolls taken away. Restriction actaully meant that we were restricted from everything...the phone, tv, friends, playing outside, junk food, everything but chores! Not to gloat, but my parents managed to raise three good kids. My older brother and I both have our Masters degrees, I'll be going back in 10 years for my PhD. My little bro has his own business and does very well for himself. None of us have spent an hour in jail, no drug problems, no alcoholics, or even smoke. While we fought like crazy as kids, now we all get along great, give hugs when we leave, and can all depend on each other for anything, I have friends who grew up never being spanked or really punished, didn't know what restriction was and so on. Many of my friends that I've had since I was in high school are just losers, they either have, or are married to someone with drug problems, been in jail, divorceda few times, five kids by five dads, etc. I thought my parents were soooo strict growing up, but now I look back and am so grateful.
i feel the same way about my parents. my dad was a hard worker , but with 5 kids money was tight. he used to take us kids up to "tightwad" hill, where alot of people would go to watch the tacoma tigers baseball game. we played board games and camped with our cousins alot. we did things as a family. if we messed up , we were punished like you. no tv no nothing. lol . i am lucky with my daughter kayla. at 17 she is a beauty, inside and out. long, long blonde hair , she was a cheerleader and now she is on the high school crimson haze dance team, she is in the upward bound scholarship program and is an honor roll student. she has a deep love of god and is a very kind hearted , giving person. i am so proud of her. my other daughter is a whole other story ! lol . heres a pic of kayla with her best friend at the high school tolo dance.
thank you ! she's a really great kid. sarah is better now than she was. she ran away and was gone for 6 months. i think she was very jealous of kayla . sibling rivelry. her mom left her and her brother with me when they were very young and never came back. sarah went and found her. she had only been there for a month when she called crying. she said she realized what great parents we had been and wanted to come home. she is back now and doing better. she said her mom was drunk all the time and had sarah for her personal slave. i'm glad she found her though. she really appreciates her life here alot more now. she says she realizes who her "real" mom is now. its like the saying goes, if you love something, set it free, if it comes back it was meant to be. in this case it was sooo true.
Great post Dusty! :) Remeber the TV show with Buffy, Jody, Sissy & Mr. French? How about The Ghost & Mrs/Muer? (Sp?) , Lost in Space......with the Robot always swirling his arms about..... My favorite Martian.... ahhhhhhhh
DCH==I have only traveled through Texas twice during four summers to get back and forth between California and Mississippi(<my home). I'm as Southern as they come. I'm actually from Pascagoula,MS...right on the Gulf :) We had dinner at the table, soap washing if your mouth spouted ugliness, lol! I do remember the things you've mentioned at my house very well. You never disrespected your elders,or there was heck to pay. We used to go to the drive-ins all the time,on "family night",when the prices were cheaper than all the other nights, lol! Speaking of drive-ins,we now have one that's local here in TN...same as mentioned, two movies, listen to the movie on your radio speakers, sit on the ground/back of your truck/car,wherever you can/want to sit. It's a little more expensive here though...I believe 5 dollars a person....pretty expensive for my bunch of 7 people to my family =( Not including drinks, popcorn, etc. I wish we had "car/truck load" prices here too. Our Hands on Science Center does have a "cap" on their prices though...40 bucks a day for the visit,so we are saving about 5 bucks if we do that with the cap, lol!
You know,I can't help but to enjoy the "old days" even more for the sake of larger families--It was always nice to see that others weren't so judging of those with more than one or two kids. Society has changed drastically with what they are accepting of when it comes to another persons choice of small versus large family size. I believe a person should have the right to do as they will when they plan a family, and not be judged so harshly by others(no,I don't agree with having kids by all different dads and such, but more along the normal lines of family size....I'm judged ALL the time for having had six children). I believe society and values have changed with-in the family structure, that's all. There was a time when having five children didn't make anyone blink an eye,but it's no longer the case now days. I've had some very judgemental comments made to me by strangers nonetheless. I just wish society as a whole could go back to the old days I guess, lol!
Oh my gosh my brother bought the full dvd of lost in space. He is a major fan! His daughter LOVES the show!
I remember penny candy. I saw in a store these now and laters I use to eat and those or mr grape or apple or lemon heads red hots! They are almost a dollar when they used to be 1 penny! I liked those candys that were in those disk things and they were hard little colored ball candy things and the plastic like disk would disapear and then the candy. I forget what those were called.
I got a good one for you! I rember when my mother would'nt whup us for nothing in the world she would always sit down and talk to us.it was the DARN NEIGBOR- MRS.BUSH! if she saw us up in a tree she would come running with a switch she cut down off a tree and tear our legs up. and would tell us now go tell your mom i whup your but . you think we didn't.( mom mrs. Bush whup us with a switch.my mother would say well you needed it stay down from the tree like she told you. NOW days if you call yourself trying to discipline somebody else child , you might get shot or they might even let their dogs go on you . or try to do something to your car.what happen to the love we once had ? what went wrong with society. i'm not even gonna try to figure that one out.as i got older i thank mrs. bush for those whuppings she gave us . we turn out to be beautiful girls and made mom proud. oops! while i'm typing the little boy who lives across the street just threw a bottle into the street. think i'm open up my door and say something. no thank you.
Linda P the reason I asked where you were from was because YOur story sounds so close to my childhood I was checking to see if you were one of my cousins or sisters. I dont judge people on how many kids they have I wanted more but for medical reasons I could not have more. Both of my kids were born 3 months early and almost died so I decided not to have anymore.
Teacup now days you will go to jail if you spank the neigbors kid but back then no one ever thought about it .Back then children were taught to respect their elders and such I no if I had of ever told somebody I dont have to your not my mother .I would have lived to regret it. I grew of on a dairy farm and we had to work most of the time anyway.
DCH,I know you weren't judging me for the amount of kids I have....I can only hope I didn't come off that way in my post...It was just a generalization I guess about the differences of family size now and then....err,the way it's viewed by society...it's just sad to see,is all.
I'm sorry you had such a hard time carrying your children...I,too,can relate to this with the last four of mine....and the birth of my first one as well....blood loss-almost died too :( We can e-mail about those things if you want to...seems like we DO have soooo much in common. Just hope I didn't make you feel as though my comment was meant for you-It was just in general. You've never said anything to me or anyone else that I've seen/read that would indicate that attitude from you about family size :)
Gotta go pick up my pre-k kiddo, lol!
I'll be back.
Oh,and I wanted to say DCH,I bet we could share some stories that would blow others minds...make them think we were sisters or blood family, lol! That would be a hoot, especially since we are from totally different states, lol!
