I don't have kids yet, but I want four at least. I don't have a problem with people with lots of kids, I have a problem with people who let their kids run wild, scream in restaurants and wander around. My biggest pet peeve is parents who buy their kids Heely's and let them skate around the restaurant like its a roller ring, while they talk. Just on Saturday, I saw a young couple walking through the parking lot with twin boys, who looked about 2. There was a big red SUV coming and the mom, with a kid hanging off each arm, walked right in front of the SUV then started yelling at the driver, using some of the foulest language I'd ever heard in front of her kids. She didn't even look before entering the street, it looked like she was trying to get hit, or at least get the kid hit...he'd be worth more to the insurance company. I wonder if she lets her kids speak like that? I love kids, but I think too many people have them for the wrong reasons!
OMG... I remember the old oil stoves (1 in the kitchen & the other in the living room) as our only sources of heat. I remember my mom throwing my knockers (toy) into the kitchen stove cause I drove her nuts with the constant banging.
The old hand pumps to get water, some outside & some inside (they were the well-to-do's) & outhouses at your grandparents who still lived in the country. These grandparents didn't get indoor plumbing until the 80's & til the day they died, only had a wood buring stove in the kitchen for all heating & cooking needs.
Driving up to the A&W & getting burgers & root beers.
Skipping & hopscotch ALL THE TIME.
There were at least 2 corner stores on every street & you could get a $hit load of candy for 25 cents.
Everyone knew who you were & would call your parents if you were being bad.
The rabbit ears & vinyl records & old record players.
Picking berries for a snack by day & catching Fire Flies by night & then letting them go free outside your bedroom window.
Oh and I could never forget being 1 of about 10 (or so) people being crammed into a car that would only fit 6 at the most for a 2 hour drive. At least it wasn't a Ford Pinto we were being cramed into, although we exceeded the maximum amount of passengers by allowing one of the younger kids to get into the hatchback & ride into town.
me too ! we used to load into cars on friday nights and "cruise" through herfys drive through.we would all get together and hang out in the parking lot and no one complained because at least they knew where their kids were. when i was real young, A&W root beer was the place to go. my dad would buy the gallon jugs and they were real glass and not plastic. and drive in movies were where we would go on dates and not remember enough of the movie to tell our parents what the movie was about. lol
This post is way more fun than all the mix dogs and pit bull and whos educated and who not post. I remember when dogs were dogs and not allowed in the house and they got leftovers .Oh never ever could the dog sleep with you at night.
i agree doggie . this post is way more fun with NO fighting. back in the"days" we didnt have internet. if we had problems with people we just hashed it out face-to-face, argued, made up and went about our merry ways. we climbed trees, played "kick the can" and hide and seek until the wee hours. drank coca-cola out of real glass bottles.watched casper and bugs bunny when cartoons were actually good and watched lassie and rin tin tin and they were actual breeds. those were the days !
I remember watching Threes Company and having absolutely no idea what they were really talking about. I watch it now, and I am totally shocked that my mom let us watch it as kids. TV rules were very strict for us. I'm not sure how Threes Company was allowed. But, no harm done.
And oh do I miss good cartoons. Nowadays they seem just as bad as rated R movies. I think Lil Bill and Blues Clues are safe though!
Threes company ==I didnt really know what gay was either and I think I was older when that show came on but I grew up in a little town and that stuff wasnt talked about.
Dusty I dont remember any of us kids fighting either I think we knew we'd get it if we were bad. Remember the homemade ice cream party after church on Sunday nights .We would all take turns, turning the handle.
Thank you, for bringing back great memories. Its just not the same anymore. Kids are so spoiled nowadays. My neice takes the bus to school, the same school I went to, I never took the bus. We had to walk to school, rain or shine. I remember our old record player, we still have a box of old records. I called HMV(record storea) looking for a CD for Ray Conniff, and the guy had to ask someone who it was.
I think its funny how steel monkey bars were just fine for us, but now its manditory to have plastic playgrounds. And, they have sand now, we had cement. I loved the Drive in as a kid, we still have one in Oakville thats doing great business, and has 3 screens. Remember tinker toys?Matchbox cars?Board Games?Blocks? We used to play on the street all day till the street lights came on, hung out in the ditches and played tag all day. 3's company was my favourite show, I used to rush home from school to watch it. I think I saw every episode. And The Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, one of my favourites. When I was I think around 8 my dad started to bring us to work with him at night. He worked as a wholesaler for the Toronto Sun. So in the middle of the night, he would go deliver papers to stores and Sun Boxes, he drove a Van kind of like the UPS type trucks. Sometimes because there was no traffic at that time of night, my dad used to let us drive or we would sit on the bottom step of the truck and drag our feet on the road when he was driveing. We learned to hang on, and wave to the police officers (hehe) We couldn't imagine wearing a seat belt.
I remember cruising! We used to cruise this street that is super long and had lots of movie theaters, bowling allies and places to eat. So we knew if we cruised up and down we would run into other people hopefully some cute guys! I would get a car load of friends. It was fun! After awhile though the police started to watch and if you went around more than 3 times they would pull you over. It did get out of hand now that I look back because you got 21 - 23 year olds running in the streat drunk trying to pick up girls who were 16-18 in cars. Since crusing was more for the kids. What else was there to do after the movies or bowling was done? Those drunk guys I think ruined it and the fact that the highschool boys all of a sudden thought it was a racing street and there was accidents. Someone once stood out in the street with one of those horns in a can for lack of better words and started blowing it at drivers going by. Yea that caused a accident. Some people ruin it for others!
i remember loving the beatles. my cousin and i were a few month apart ( she passed last year) we collected 16 magazines and took all the pics out of them and plastered our walls with them. mostly beatle pics. she loved paul mccartney and i john lennon. we had all their records . the lps. and we played them on one of those old stereos, well they were new back then, that looked like a suitcase. you could hear the scratches as they played. i remember going to sleep to the songs "close your eyes"and "i wanna hold your hand" lol
