I am so sick and tired of people bragging about leaving their dogs outside. My dogs play outside but they live indoors with the family. Please stop telling me that GSD and rotts need to be outdoors 24/7 for their own happiness. That is the biggest load of crap! Dogs and I mean all dogs are social animals. They love being with their people. Mine follow me around my house. They sleep next to my bed. My dog actually moved his bed to be closer to me. How can anyone say he would rather live outdoors? Please stop spreading lies. If you keep your dog outside that is your business but don't make up stupid lies to justify your wrong decision. Don't tell me that the GSD will be destructive indoors because he would rather be outside 24/7. You are a liar. Buy a crate while your dog is a puppy. Any puppy chi or GSD will chew things while teething. My friend owns a destructive chi. He has chewed up her cabinets, rug, blinds, chairs, and etc. Does that mean she should kick the chi out of the house? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Some people value material possessions over sharing their space with their pets.
Some people look at a dog as a worker.
Some dogs just adore being outdoors too.
Although people like you and I don't nessacarily agree with others beliefs I have learned it is best in lots of cases not to open up the can of worms unless the dog is in serious dangerous because all it will do is cause pages and pages of a neverending name calling battle.
It is just best to quietly disagree and hug our pets a little bit tighter when we hear something we dislike.
Besides it would be impossible and stange if we pressed our beliefs on others who differ.

I am fine with people having their own opinions but please don't spread lies. Don't tell people that they should keep their GSD outside or it will tear up your house. This is not true. Mine live indoors. Many people have GSD indoors. Mine don't chew up anything but their bones and their toys.
Well, I am not sure if my situation got you upset. But my dog Koda HAS to stay outside most of the time. He does come in but he has to go back out within an hour. He has a problem with his lungs that causes him to hyper ventilate severly. (THe vet said it is like pre-asthma) We do let him come in but he starts panting really bad after a few minutes, and within 20 he is pawing at the door to get out. This only happens in the winter, when it is summer, it is too hot for him to be outside all the time. So we reverse the process. Koda cannot sleep through the night in the house, so he sleeps in our garage in his crate, he has a heater bought specifically for him it heats about half of his crate so that if he gets too hot, he can move to the cooler side.
Sorry if you do not agree with what we do but my vet said that it would take years off of his life to let him hyperventilate the way he does. I love my dog and want him to be around for a long time. Koda also has two dog houses, and a seperate covered porch specifically builts for the dogs, it is raised to keep them off the ground.
Well like the other poster already said, some people believe the dogs should be kept outside.
Where I live (TN), outside the city limits, many people have their dogs and cats outside.
A school friend of my daughters had a Weimarener (1 yr.) and she got hit by a police car. The dog wanted to cross the road, because she saw something. Sadly the dog had to be put to sleep.
Basically that can happen, when you leave your dog outside and not in a fenced in area. This always makes me upset, when a dog or any other animal gets hurt.
I rather have my pets inside. And NO, they don't always destroy everything, that's just the puppy stage. My Golden Retriever (2 yr.) doesn't chew anything anymore and our Sheltie (8 month) doesn't do it anymore either. My dachshund is already 8 yrs. old.
KatzPomDogz I do understand your sitution. That is a total different circumstance and I'm very sorry.

I disagree with pets being kept outside 24/7 for any reason. There is no reason, just an excuse really. Dogs are social pack animals and need to be with their pack (human family). Leaving them outside is not only physical abuse but mental abuse. IMHO.
I actually called the SPCA Humane Law Division one day about this issue. My neighbors have 2 gorgeous black/chocolate labs. They are tied up outside to their dog houses 24/7. Their is poop everywhere, they clean it but not very often. They do have food and water and are actually very chunky dogs. But they never get walked, no one ever plays with them or pays attention to them.... so I called the SPCA to see if they'd consider that abuse. They said in their personal opinions yes and they hope someday to prosecute people like that, but right now they can't.
Please try to use clean language and good grammar. Please treat others with respect
So you don't respect the rules of the administrator, you don't rescpect somebody elses opinion, so I could clearly assume that you have little respect for anybody.
So I guess scarydog you can't use clean language nor show any respect for somebody elses opinion. But I guess that just shows how mature you are.
Actually if you would now me I'm not such a bad guy. I love my GSD with all me heart and I would die protecting him. I have invested so much on my dog that everybody is calling me crazy for it. I do spent more time with him than almost any other family member. Probably I am explaining all this in vain because to you it will probably be a lie. You should have a litle faith. You can't be right all the time, nor can I but try to be open minded, and don't call people stupid without knowing them.
And for your info my dog is not 24/7 outside, but still I don't see nothing wrong with that if the dog gets attention on daily basis, is checked regularly to the VET, has work to do, and has a nice insulated dog house. In my opinion based on a lot of research that I have done working dogs are just not meant for the inside.
scarydog. calling people stupid is not the way to get them to listen to your views. although i do totally agree that pets shouldnt be kept outside 24-7. my dogs have always lived indoors, cats too. i have a large fenced yard, that they love to play in. but they LIVE indoors. harley has never been destructive . for the running fetch games, we played them outside. he always had plenty of toys to keep him busy indoors and out of trouble. he was never hyper or destructive. dogs will do what you allow them to do. if trained young they will adjust perfectly to the rules of the house. gsd's are very smart and quick learners. our dogs are a part of our family which includes living in the house where the other family members live.
Ditto with lifeofrileys post. Don't agree with dogs being left outside 24'7 at all. What about in extreme weather onditions? Why even own a dog if it's going to just be the amusement in the backyard? Grow up. If people don't want to treat their pets like living creatures and as equal as a human, the only time I would agree as if it has a medical reason like Koda. but like I said, thats my opinion.
I won't tear you apart for leaving your dog outside, but I will for spreading lies that some specific breeds would RATHER be outside. Any dog would rather be inside, and GSDs happen to be one of the easiest breeds to train.

I think to each his own. I've had outdoor only dogs, and indoor dogs. Regardless, they were all very loved, got a lot of attention, were well taken care of, and happy. We have only small dogs right now, and they must be kept inside because we have coyotes that can climb fences.
Katz, I am not upset with you. I wouldn't keep my dog inside if it means killing him. Your situation is very unique. However, Ben likes to tell people that GSD are better outdoors or they will be destructive. If you keep your dog outside that's your own thing but please don't tell potential owners that a GSD will destroy their house. Any breed will destroy your house when it's teething and you allow it. My friend's chi has done thousands in damage. New furniture, cabinets, anything he can get to. Every puppy needs to be crated. A crate protects the puppy and the house. My friend had a puppy who ate everything on the floor. He needed to be in a crate when no one was home to supervise. A crate is not cruel. A crate is actually a dog's den.
msg #26 IP: Logged 3:31:57 PM 11/17/2005 I would not recomend you get a working dog as an inside dog. They are most happy outside working. If they are kept locked inside alone they tend to be destructive.
Oh yeah keeping a dog outside means they won't be destructive. I know someone with a GSD and he is kept outside. The poor thing wants nothing but to come inside. He is always pawing at the door. Guess what, due to loneliness he digs huge holes all over the yard, he tears up parts of the house, and eats the deck. Ok that's not destructive at all!
Alright, I was just curious. I hate having him be out there, but I want him to live a long and happy life. "He" may tell you that he is starving and neglected but he is REALLY good at getting anything he wants!!! Ha!!!
