I just read an article in this months addition of cat fancy magazine about the country's most notorious pet-theft ring in history!!! Here's part of the article...
"A fifteen year undercover investigation lead federal, state and local police to C.C Baird who was the nations largest U.S. department of agriculture- licensed class "b" animal dealer. They came across Baird when investigating lincesed class "b" dealers who were selling randon animals to research facilities. These random source animals included peoples pets stolen from homes or cars, strays and seized animals from shetlers. Baird pled guilty to mail fraud. He violated the animal welfare act by transferring dogs and cats to research facilities with false acquistion records at his Martin creek kennel. His wife a liscensed class "A" animal breeder at Pats Pine Tree farm breeding facility. She also pled guilty. They had 700 acres of land which included their home and former dog and cat kennels in Sharp County Ark. Baird was fully liscensed by the USDA. The conditions of his facilities were beyond inhumane. Animals were sick, neglected and injured. " There's a bit more to it... What a terrible story... Has anyone read this or heard of this story.... Imagin your pet stolen!!! AND SOLD TO A RESEARCH FACILITY!! They deserve that judge who made the woman sit in the woods for a nite!!! They should do some "research" on these to morons!!
That is so terrible! I couldn't even imagine how bad I would feel. I always wonder, what is going on in these people's brains? What part of that idea do they find say, productive or good? It makes me sick. Heart CP
Sadly, this happens more often than anyone ever knows about. There are even some unscrupulous savages who obtain rescue licenses, go to shelters to "save" the dogs, and then turn around & sell them to research facilities. While I am not completely against research on animals, I do draw the line at animals considered "pets." I know that every animal can actually at one time or another be deemed as a pet, but I, personally, find a vast difference between lab rats/mice & dogs, cats, horses, monkeys, etc.
I completely understand the need to do research on monkeys & swine who's bodily makeup is most akin to humans, and without such research many life saving drugs would never see the light of day, but I do see it as a necessary evil. Does it give me a warm fuzzy feeling....... absolutely not. Next to dogs, pigs are my passion.
I know the lab research on some of these animals makes me sick... I do believe that science has come along way and has helped cure many terrible diseases thru animal research.
BUT, SOME STUFF IS JUST UNCALLED FOR, like the use of animals for research with cosmetics, shampoo etc.... u wanna know if your product will sell use it on yourself.... test it on your own eyes!!!
I saw a show about stem cell research for Lou Gehrigs disease. They used lab rats to test new ideas etc... They actually had some very positive results.
Well this is a whole nother topic I probably dont know enough about to debate over but i was just disturbed to read they were stealing pets from cars and homes....
I take my golden EVERYWHERE!! Once when he was a puppy he jumped out the window of my dads car while he was in the store. When he came out he thought someone stole him My dad freaked out and chased down a bunch of "suspecious " looking men whom he had seen in the parking lot earlier. He pulled them over and made them open there trunk!!! No dog! He was mautified and still a wreck!! He drove around and eventually found my dog woundering around a few blocks away!!!! Thank god!! lol funny now but scary then....
