I live in Rhode Island. I send 2 of my dogs to daycare 3 days a week, we go to a playgroup on the weekend, we also participate in flyball, obedience, and agility classes.
On Friday there was a sign posted at daycare saying that there has been a case of the dog flu in our area. How concerned should I be? I'm not sure if the age of the dog has an impact, these are my dogs, would you more concerned about some then others?
Pip: 3 year old Border Terrier Ryssa: 1 1/2 yr old Border Collie with compromised immune system (Had severe case of parvo as a puppy before we got her from rescue, has a lot of health issues now: Zola: 12 yr old dobie Rio: 11 year old dobie.
What activities do you think I should still allow the guys to participate in? Should I be more concerned about the older dogs and Ryssa?
Dobielover1 Please -----my bitch just got over the flu and it was horrible. I took my puppy to a local show and she brought it home and the only one who caught it(it seems to be a selective ailment) was my 4 week pregnant bitch. I had not heard of this flu or I never would have attended the show. I caught it very early or else I might have lost her. She did abort the litter. The first symptom was she refused food. Not normal for a PG bitch. I took her temp it was 102.5 high normal. I went to work but came home at break and she again refused food, so I took her in. The vets had not dealt with it either so didn't know what was wrong, and tried to put me off but I know my bitch and they started trying to figure it out. She was put on Amoxicillian 500mg 2X day. within 3 days she was wheezing and they feared pneumonia, but luckily it never got that far due to EARLY INTERVENTION. She did get a temp of 103 briefly, but the meds worked. It's been 4 weeks and she just started eating normally 10 days ago. Don't take a chance with it. I got lucky but lost the litter. A friend of mine's litter got it and she lost most of the pups. The common denominator seems to be to keep them WARM. My bitch wore her coat (looks like a horse blanket) for 5 days and I live in Texas. She didn't overheat though I thought she would. Good luck with this. I would stay out of daycare until this blows over
