Hi, my friend was given an older mini poodle. She has not been spayed. I shaved her down due to badly matted hair and I did not see a scar. I noticed the dog has a rather big belly. She might have worms. She might be pregnant. I will tell my friend to take her to the vet on Monday since this really doesn't seem like an emergency. She is not eating and rarely drinks water. I had fed her some scrambled eggs and she ate a little bit. Is this a sign of pregnancy (not eating)? Can I be able to feel for puppies and how? We are really anxious to find out. She is about 12 yrs old +
take a tissue and wipe out the inside of her vulva ..... if you see anything on the tissue that resembles blood or pus.....she may have a pyometra ..... a closed one is very serious and her uterus can rupture and kill her. an open one is bad also ..... in any event whatever is wrong with her absolutely cannot wait til monday to see a vet.
I wiped her scout and nothing. We looked at a picture of a pregnant small dog and she looks nothing like that. Her belly is a little round. Could it possibly be that she is just shaped this way? She is acting like a normal dog except she has no appetite. Could it be that she is just in an adjustment period due to change of environment? She was used to being fed wet food (mighty dog) and my friend won't give her wet food. She tried giving her some Thanksgiving turkey without the skin and she was not interested. Everything else about her is pretty normal. She poops and pess just fine. No accidents in the house. She walks fine and sleeps through the night. She doesn't seem to be in pain or she would be whining since she whines when we leave the room. We just started to worry because she is not fixed and it is always possible for a dog to be pregnant when she is intact. We have no idea if she was exposed to any male dogs. She needs to get fixed but it makes us worry since she is an older lady. She doesn't show her age though. She definitely looks good.
At 12 I wouldn't think she is pregnant. Like someone else said they don't stop eating until it's really close to having pups. My dogs temp drops to APROX 97 right before. You could take her temp and see if it's normal. In older dogs it could be so many things. Better go to the vet. Good luck
I looked at her belly again. It's not that big. I compared it to my little dog and no difference there. She is not eating but will drink water. She is urinating normally. She is playful. My friend called the vet and explained the situation. The vet thinks she is just adjusting to the new household and new food.
