werent at one point our purebreed dogs a mix of other dogs, and thru years of breeding and recognition by th AKC they became purebreeds??? if im mistaken im sorry. But i've been reading alot of posts about mutts, designer dogs, hybrids and i was just woundering?
Ex: Curly Coated Retriever was said to be Irish Water Spaniel and Newfoundland. So somebody thought these two dogs would be a great mix and eventually came out with the Retriever? Is that what was the original thoughts of mixing Labs and poodles etc...? (seeing eye dog?)
Well i realize all dogs were a mix of others,. sorry for the dumb question.
That's not a dumb question at all. You are absolutely right. They all started from some kind of mix. And these new mixes/hybrids are also very darling. I've really taken an interest inthem lately. Love the look of those shaggy dogs. Actually thinking about getting one of them.
I agree with you as well. I own a puggle and absolutely adore her!!! I believe all "purebred" dogs were made from a mixture at one time. Every "designer" dog that I have seen all turn out looking the same within their breed. Doesn't that define a breed?

Bradley,I dont know of a good breeder, but where do you live?I may be able to help. Do you want a male or female? Pupy or young adult or and adult? How much do you want to pay for one? You could look at your local shelter...these goldenooodles are always in the shelters. What ever you do do not get from a petstore.
while it is true that purebreeds were at one time mixes ...they werent all mixed from currently recognized breeds. when man domesticated the wolf this creating the dog .. the dogs at that time were referred to as pariah dogs. just your basic street dog. from these dogs are where we now have our current recognized purebreds. carefully selecting from these pariah dogs for certain basic traits to fit in to what specific people needed a dog to do for them. there were all different sorts of pariah dogs all over the planet. hence why many breeds of today can trace lineage back to several differnt countries. the nomadic lifestyle that many people lived thousands of years ago led to wide gene pools, different attributes, which led to what we have today thru careful selection. those were the foundation dogs and since then they have further been bred to what we have now in the various breeds and looks and functions.
I beleive it is said that if you take one of each of the dog breeds and leave them all together to mate on their own naturally, that eventually throught time you would end up back to the original street dog.
Hi. Okay, i'm confused. So is a "goldendoodle" a purebreed dog? I thought it wasn't, because it's a *mix* of a golden retriever and a poodle. I was upset a while back because in the pet store they were selling a goldendoodle. Above goldendooldle it said purebreed and they were selling it for the price of a purebreed dog. Can you explain this please? Thanx, Me Loo :)
All right, well thanks. I was pretty sure that was a mix. They also put ckc registered on the top, wich doesn't say much, but is sure enough to make someone who doesn't know all that much about dogs think that they are getting a full breed dog when they aren't! That makes me so mad! Me Loo :)
I know what you are saying, but dog breeding to 'make' a truly purebred, showable dog that will breed true everytime takes YEARS and lots of responsible breeders. However, throwing two dogs together and calling them a 'puggle breed', 'goldendoodle' or 'cockapoo'(just a few examples), and reselling these mixes for high prices is irrisponsible, immature, and shows no knowledge of dogs. Someone who really knows dogs knows that it takes more than a year to get a true breeding dog.
Also, NO mix, that's right, NO mix breed dog is a hybrid. It's quite funny how people mix a purebred pug and a purebred beagle together then sell it as a hybrid. Dogs at pounds are also mixes. Being intentionally bred does NOT make them hybrids. A hybrid would be something like a 'liger', a lion and a tiger mixed together, or a mule, which is a donkey and a horse. Heart CP
The other thing to keep in mind is man made these dogs for a working purpose not as family pets, that and back then we weren't killing 3 million excess dogs a year.... Dogs were domesticated and made for a reason, not just as pets. When and why that changed, well society changed, technology changed and here we are.
I have nothing against mix breeds, I have an issue with killing pets for no reason.
