My Great Dane is currently on Chicken Soup dogfood and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on something else I could feed him. He has allergies...to what I'm not exactly sure. He is my first dane..and I may just be inexperienced, but he is SOOO skinny. You can see all his vertebrae on his back, most of his ribs and his hips stick out. I see him eat every single day...and I am positive he's getting enough. So why is he so skinny? Are danes just like that? Most danes I see are pretty skinny anyway. But do you any of yall have any suggestions? Chicken Soup is about $32 for 35 lbs. That's about the most I can pay for, and he has allergies.
You seem to have a problem with your Great Dane absorbing any fats!. I would suggest you give him a natural diet of meats, veggies and grains. By you monitoring his diet you can control the amount of fat he takes in. Chicken would be the best meat to feed him as it is high in fat. Check with your vet for the right percentage of fats, carbs, he should be getting for his ideal weight. If he has allergies I would suggest you not give him any foods with wheat or corn in the ingredients. These are the 2 top ingredients that cause allergies.
Thanks for replying. The vet told me he had allergies when he got a bad ear infection when he was younger...but that he was too young to test exactly to what. He is about a year and a half. And I've been told they are pretty skinny till about 2 years, then they begin to fill out. I have a picture of him somewhere....
He is thin, but not too skinny. I AM NOT a professional, but from a normal person standpoint, I think he just looks thin. Healthily so, though.
His coat is very shiny and I think that accentuates the areas where you can kinda see bones.
Again, from a very not professional standpoint, he looks like a 14 yr old boy when their legs start getting long and their feet are too big and they weigh about 1/2 as much as they will in two yrs. and they look all lanky and awkward! ha ha.. That is the stage your guy's in.
Mainly just came on to tell you he is very handsome.
He looks fine to me, is the dog altered? I don't think a heavy Dane would be a good thing anyways. My dog was also very skinny a few years ago. I started her on a diet called Medical, and put her on a fitness schedule, and shes mainly maintained a good weight. exercise goes hand in hand with body weight. Feed many smaller meals through out the day, and avoid straight dry dog food meals.
hello...here comes my 2 cents... ive only seen a few hefty danes in my years most are lean..
how old is he..did you see his parents? were they really lean too? Do you free feed or give a meal? I think its time to get the vet to do an allergy test..its expensive..but you will no and not second guess..and then if it is allergys you can give just the right things..
I personally liked chicken soup too..but its made by diamond..and most ingredents are exact..percentages too..but way cheaper..i changed..and no one has had bad results..even a shep pup sold the lady told me he had skin problems and allergies and was on vet care..but i kept telling her to go back to diamond..finally she did..and i told her to stop switching around and feed it for a month and see..well.low and behold..hes fine now..no medications needed...but thats just my experence mind you...everyones will be different
My shady... a lean shepherd is a finicky eater...we always free fed her since she was small....after this last litter she slimmed down and refused to eat...even dry with canned mixed...after she stoped nursing..so..i tried canadea...she nibbled..but we still have the same bag..and thats been lets see..2 months or more..we have it in a self feeder thing..since we have pups roaming in the kitchen and dining room..she eats there food..diamond puppy...lamb and rice..she didnt want it when i fed it to her with canned..but with pups around...she eats it..dont ask why...lonely or greedy...who knows.. but she is eating again..i hate to correct her to stay out of their pan..for fear she will stop eating again..
my suggestion is start with good vet care..get a allergy test done., get thyroid done too. well worth it.in the long run..then..if you free feed...stop..and give meals..if your giving dry...try a can of wet mixed in..smaller meals are best to not have problems with bloat...your breed and mine are prone to it..His coat is too shiny to suggest he is in poor health..he might just be in the growth stage...or he might just be a skinny dane..bred from skinny danes..Good luck..and i hope it works out well for you and yours..
that is how my vix looked when i adopted her. I was a personal cook for about a month (brisket, veggies any meats with fat her fav. was bakin and eggs!)also try giving him some fish oil pills now vix is on a strict diet of lamb and rice my vet suggested and its been great she is 147 lbs now and when i got her she was a very sad 112lbs....lol i went to the popund to get a cat...came back with a dane!
