We have decided to add another addition to our family. We have a female schnauzer and we had a litter and we are planning to keep one of the female pups. My dad had two dogs that always were jealous and nippy at each other. How do mom and pups usally do together? Is it ok to keep two females or is it better to have male and female. My mom is really sweet and seems great with the pup. Can that change as the pup gets older or will mom stay mom and the pup be more submissive.
Yes. Some dogs of the same sex can and may live together peaceful. You must also factor in the breed, temperment, etc. Though with most terriers, due to their fiestiness (I guess) it's SUGGESTED to get male and female.
hello laci.. i had a toy poodle years ago...and she had a pup..i kept...they did fine...pup was not submissive...but i have a domineering female schnauzer...we got a male at the same time...and he was several weeks older...and hence,..bigger...they grew up together...and even though she was teeny tiny when we brought her home she differntly rules the roost...she pushes shamus around yet...and steals his treats...so...male/female isnt an exact thing in my book either...it will go by the personality of the particular dog...ours is dominant..pushy...and spoiled...ROTTEN!!! good luck...i hope it works out great...
Thanks guys. I think they will do fine. We want Lacie to have a buddy for when we are not home. She gets lonely. We take her most places and camping but sometimes we can't, and I think a partner for her will be fun. I am keeping the rascal of the litter. She is so adorable and playful. She is so full of personality and so social. I never have had dogs before. My sister is a breeder of yorkies and I have watched her for years. We got Lacie two years ago and she has so completed our family. One of the families that bought one of my pups is my sons best friends. He is an only child and they are so excited. That pup is going to be his best friend. It is so fun to be a part of this. Thanks for all your kind advice. I have learned so so much on this web site and I tell everyone about it. All the families that are buying my pups will be given this site. You can learn anything. Just seeing how much people love their animals teaches you to love and appreciate yours all the more. Thanks again!!!
i have had no proplem with putting a momma dog with her pups. i have a entire family i have the dad, the mom and two sisters and the only thing that i find is that at feeding time the mom will growl at the others.i just figure it is because she was on the streets for a while before i found her so she had to be protective of her food to suvivie.but when i say be nice she lets them eat.
