my baby renegade is so cute. he is a 7 month old little handful. this is my first dachshund and i know they are hard headed.and i was wondering if anyone has any information on helping him. first of all the people i got him from had him for about 6 months before i got him.and i don't think they took anytime with him as far a potty training him and teaching him not to jump in the middle of your plate when you sit down to eat. and i have had him for about a month and a half now and he is improving a little. he still will go in the floor when ever he feels like it.how should i disipline him when he does.i mean i have trained other dogs not to go in the house but they only took a week or so. and he is just hard headed.and i have been feeding him a 3/4 cup of food is that to much or to little? i do not want him getting fat cause i do not want to hurt his back.and how can i stop him from trying to dig a hole in the carpet and eating everything that does not eat him first?like leaves, paper, insects, plastic, acorns, sticks, and anything else he can find. and all of this stuff he has it gone before i even have a chance to get it out of his mouth.like the first day i got him i made breakfast and the sat down on the couch and befor i could get all the way sat down he had already had my sausage ate.
Get a crate for him so when are not home he can't eat or get into things. The crate is also useful for housebreaking him. I would take him to obedience classes so he can learn how to behave. I would keep a leash on him indoors so if he is doing something bad you can correct him. If he is motioning to pee you can say no and pull him and take him outside. As for the food you should read the label on the bag. Different foods require different amounts. There should be a weight chart.
I do have a question of my own and I am not sure whether or not anyone will be able to help in the matter. My mother has a one of these dogs as well she is about three years old. She is potty trained and everything The issue is only certain people can touch her. When I try to pet her or other people, she gets excited or something and will pee on the floor so when they have guests over they either have to put her away or have them not touch her. Is this normal behavior for these types of dogs? If so is there anything that can be done to correct the problem??? Any help is very appreciatied!! Thanks guys!!
wow duck...a hot dog with a leak..i guess i shouldnt joke.. was the lil girl spayed..if so...was she real young...some times incontenence results in real young spays..also..has she always done this...or just start? if she resently started id get uti ruled out first..might be submission peeing too...she gets scared and lets loose..poor pooch..
as for the hardheadd doxie..i say give him more time..if its #1..try a belly band..if its #2..try a diaper...you dont want it to keep happening..i would put a collar on this pup and give him a correction if they approached my plate..
but..first...do you feed him off your plate any other time? Do you ever put a plate down and let him finish it off..if so..stop..it is confusing him..some dogs are just gluttons..i have several..but Shady is a delacate particular eater..and wont eat something unless given directly to her..make sure your not sending mixed messages..and then reinforse the behavior you want to happen..and if all else fails..they make little dog shock collars..but..frankly hes pretty young..but..if it means you getting sick of him..and rehoming him..yet again..id try everything..he will eventually be put down as no one wants an ill mannered dog..I know i dont..so..i say...dont give mixed messages..dont give him reason to jump and snatch the sausage..feed him only in one place...one food..and be patient...but give a correction..a snap at the collar...a noisemaker..some thing..all dogs react different..not one correction works for all dogs..in my house..the schnauzers (one inparticular) is the worse offender..she is spoiled since we got her and just rotten now...not my fault..but hubbys..so make sure your family is all on the same page...my hubby is what they call an UNtrainer...sadly...but...he does love them all..but it doesnt do them any favors in the long run...good luck both of you...
I agree with the others, crate training is the way to go. When you can't keep 100% watch on him, have him in his crate. As soon as he comes out, outside he goes until he goes potty.
When he goes potty outside, get really excited..like he just did the best thing ever! And give him a treat. When you catch him in the act inside, stomp your foot on the floor and say "NO!" and immediatly take him outside, even if he is still going. You must catch him in the act for him to understand what he is doing is wrong.
As for eating things he should not, teach him the command "Drop it". My dogs are pretty bad and "drop it" is one of the only things they listen to well, lol. When you are outside, keep him on a leash. When he picks up something he shouldn't, say "DROP IT" and tighten up the leash. You might have to physically take it from his mouth and again said "drop it". I learned this from all the gross people on campus who spit gum on the sidewalk, my dogs love eating previously chewed gum, ugh!
with the potty training he gets no time off the a 6 foot leash, unless he is in his crate or you are watching him in the same room.take him out every 2 hours and take him out 15 minutes after he eats or drink.Dont leave his food down all the time...its down for 15 minutes then it goes up if he dont eat,...O well he has later that night to eat too.
Try giving him a long walk everyday,it sounds like he is just being bored to death and not getting enough exersize thats why most of them do the things you are describing.
with him jumping up and getting your food either put him in his crate or get him on a leash and have someone else hold it and pop the leash and tell him No "Off"
give him soem more time though to settle down,he is still a puppy. enroll him in obedience classes if possible.
hes just a puppy who was never taught manners and he ruled the house, not the " master"
i don not leave is food down belive me if idid he would be as big around as he is long.and he is with my mom when i am not their and in his crate when we both are not their.and when we are both their we stay outside alot and all he wants to do is eat the accorns off of the ground and sniff the female dogs.then eventually after like an hour or two he goes to the bathroom.
So is he just messing around when he goes outside?? I bet he dont crack the acorn to easily?? Lol thats funny. I had a foster dog that was a scoodle Scotti/poodle and she had the terrier attidtude and she dug at carpet, couches, beds, blankets and outside. we got her a sand box for the outside and let her dig away and that made her quite digging inside.
