I paid 450 for my Border Collie. She was somewhat trained and healthy. You are going to pay more at a "pet store". STAY AWAY from them. Contact the AKC and ask them for names of reputable breeders in your area. The ones that make you feel like they are giving you the 3rd degree are the ones you want to deal with.
It really depends on the breed. Both my German Shepherds (with champion backgrounds) costed $900 each. My Basset was $300, Maltese $350 and Choc Lab was $300. Are you getting your dog from a breeder or shelter? Shelters will be much less if you're going for something cheaper.
Best dog I have ever owned was free. Had him at home when I was in high school, and he always seemed to be my dog. Took him in as a stray adult (and in terrible shape) He lived another 8 years and never had serious behaviour issues. I could go on and on but the point is this; What you get out of a dog is a reflection of what you put into a dog. Do a little homework, select the right dog, be vigilant in training and just expect expenses. What you spend on the dog... doesn't matter. Good dogs are a result of good relationships, not a result of dollars.
Another wonderful thing about MUTTS is they are cheaper!! Mixed breeds are terrific dogs, each unique in their own way.
I got Cinnamon (Lab x) from a rescue group for $75, which included shots and adoption fees, and I rescued Eve (Retriever x) from a someone in my neighborhood who was not taking care of her properly for FREE!
If you get an animal from the shelter or rescue group it will be ALOT cheaper. Of course you'll need to pay to have its shots and get it spayed/neutered. You can find BOTH purebred and mixed breeds there, and what is a better Christmas gift to yourself to know that you saved an animal's life! Please rescue a dog if you can! :)
That was just to get them home...LOL, I don't even want to GUESS what I've spent on them since the first one came home in July!!!!
BTW, here in New Hampshire, if you can find a medium to small breed pup in a pet store for under $1000 you're doing well! The last time I saw a pup in a pet store for under $1000, it was a pair of Malamutes--gorgeous, but they told me they won't "order" them again because while people tell them they want a large breed dog, they don't sell as well as the small breeds. Neither of my guys are from a pet store--although one has a "questionable" background. :(
Hey Siamese Gizmo, speaking of PJ's (Yorkdale Mall). I ran into a woman in Petsmart when Maggie was 4 1/2 months old. She had a puppy that looked very similar to Maggie so we started talking. Turns out her puppy was the same age as Maggie and the same Maltese/Yorkie mix. She bought her from PJ's as well. She paid believe it or not $3000 for her!! Now that's pet store mark up!
thank you all this has given me an idea of how much money i will putting in and I understand that that "money doesnt matter in this situation" but im getting him/her from a breeder in Iowa...My teacher recommended this breeder because her parents and her got dogs from this place. Her mom even offered to fly with the dog so california because she really wants to come to cali but she doesnt really have a reason and I guess for her this puppy will be a reason...so 2 wishes will be fullfilled lol...well thanks again
