i am dog sitting a few days for a friend. i am keeping a 5 or 6 week old min pin. she might weigh 1 lb. she seems to be blind. i know she also has round worms and i have treated. does anyone know what could cause the blindness and if i can do anything about it?
Yes it is tough to pet sit. I don't know anything about it myself but I would call the owners immediately and ask them about it and if you can't get them call their vet first thing in the morning. If it is nothing the vet will probably tell you over the phone. If it is something you could save this dog from a lifetime of blindness.
her eyes are cloudy, she runs into things and when you put your hand in front of her face she does not respond at all. my friend went on a trip for 3 or 4 days and ask me to keep this puppy. they just dropped her off and left,no time for questions then. they said she was eating solid food soaked in warm water however i am like you and think she should still be with the mother. anyway she threw up the dry food soaked in water so i fixed her a small amount of baby rice cereal and nutramagin( baby milk) and she loved it and it stayed down. since i wormed her she is doing better. playing more and longer and sleeping less. she still is bumping into things and is unstable on her feet. she walks funny like maybe she is being careful. could the round worms have anything to do with her not seeing or not seeing clearly? since tomorrow is monday i will call a vet and see what they say or suggest. would appreciate any input on this matter.
Often times too, which I am not sure if this is in this case or not, but the runts of a litter sometimes are a bit delayed developmental wise. Though not usually to this extent. I would get her to the vet as soon as you can to have her checked out just in case this is something that can be cleared up with salve. And hand the bill to them when they get back. I would think that if they are leaving such a young pup with someone, they would have made the time to be sure you were completely filled in and was able to ask anything you needed. Do you have a number to call them where ever they are at?
If you are really concerned about the puppy's health, I would take it to a vet. If it is not life-threatening, I would wait and let your friend take it to a vet when she gets back. I just got a new Min Pin puppy that is tiny. She weighs just over a pound and just turned 14 weeks old. Her eyes looked funny to me at first because of her small size. In fact, she looked all eyes to me. She looked more like a mouse than a puppy. Now her face is filling out and she is adorable. She runs into things too. Not because she can't see it. She is just hyper and bounces off of everything. She is constantly bumping her head. I am sure as she grows, she will learn to slow down and not bang herself off of things. I am hoping that this is the same with the puppy you are babysitting. Let us know what you find out.
Thats weird cause I think my 5 week old pup might have vision problems. He was rescued thats why he is not with mom, but sometimes it seems that he cant see as well as he should, but for the most part he acts normal and happy. When Im feeding him is when i notice the eye sight issue. I put the bowl in front of him but its like he doesnt see it or know its there till i tap the bowl with a spoon. However his eyes dont seem bad all the time. His eyes look a little cloudy but im wondering if its cause he is so young. He just turned 5 weeks so maybe he just needs some time. He was the biggest out of the litter so he definitly wasnt the runt. Im taking him in tomorow to get looked at.
Goodluck with the pup, i hope she isnt blind, hopefully she just needs some more time to grow and develop.
I had a friend that bought alittle toy poodle that was borned blind. This was years ago and I guess the people were going to have her put down. Anyway, my friend had her for about 15yrs. This little dog would constantly go in circles if she got confused. She knew the house real well and knew how to get around. When they took her outside or somewhere strange, she would start going in circles. Hope the baby is not blind, but it sounds like he is having vision problems and not completely blind.
