Discipline? Ummm, well, there's not a heck of a lot of that. Okay, seriously, I say "NO" if that doesn't work I growl "No". If he's in the bathroom trash AGAIN, I have tapped his butt and pushed him out of the bathroom with my foot. --This is actually showing progress as now when he goes in there if I say "OUT!" he leaves the bathroom (without stealing trash) If I can't take it anymore, I give myself a time out and put him in his crate. <sigh> I hate to admit it, but only one of my guys is the "him" mentioned! LOL, the other, the worst thing he does is an occasional potty accident!
i with hold rewards, i have markers like no and ah ah. these are words that let the no wrong answer. there are things i punish a little more severly for. not paying attention. when i ask. going in places like the trash. and starting fights. but even then a no or ah ah is perfectly fine. i do not use force,
i shock my dog by saying (fairly loud) aa or making a loud noise he soon gets the idea (even if you do lose your voice lol!). but you do have to be firm and stick with your rules and let him know your top dog in the house!!
depends on the offense. there is a zero tolerance rule in this house for aggression. if someone goes to start a fight then they have me to deal with. a good scruff grab and a loud no followed by a down stay settles them down pdq.
if i tell them to do something and they refuse .... like get their head out of someones food dish , either ours or another fur members, a quick slap on their butt gets their attention and tells them mom is serious.
I yell and put them in "time out." That seems to do the trick. Sometimes, if the behavior is totally unnaceptable - like dog-dog aggression or jumping on visitors (I have one friend who is pretty scared of dogs, in general) I will grab them by the scruff and scold and then put in "time out."
Hitting just scares the dogs and makes them more aggressive. Plus, I would not want to be hit. Do unto others.....
I use different methods depending on the age and the dog. When they are puppies I found the clapping loudly and yelling NO they respond well. I have 5 14 week old puppies right now and all of them know the meaning of the word No and listen to it. But of course they are puppies and sometimes get too excited and won't calm down. While I know many people are against hitting I have found a rolled up section of the news paper used to give a swat on the rump gets their attention without hurting or even scaring them. The sound combined with the feel of the swat gets them to if nothing else sit down and shut up long enough for you to say NO and have them hear it. By Harly and Kiya's age (3 and 5) all I have to do is raise my voice and if need be stand up quickly and that's all it takes for them to listen.
My dog is around 3 females who are in heat and he is spraying everywhere. I don't want to smack him because I hardly ever spank my children and consider him as such. I know it is a normal reaction but I think the last straw was him cocking his leg on my big screen tv
I make sure I have their attention by clapping my hands and lowering my voice. If the offence warrants it, I turn away from the dog. Just for a short while, though. Can't afford to have them go neurotic on me - LOL! They hate that, being ignored.
