I will give my dogs people food sometimes, but never from the table. You shouldn't feed your dog when your're eating, it teaches them to beg when food is around.
I put them outside when eating usually. It does teach them bad manners when they beg and you give in. I shouldn't actually be feeding them people food in the first place, they need to know what food is theirs and what food is ours.
I feed my dogs people food all the time.I just put it in their bowl.If they start to beg I tell them to go lay down.Or I just put them in their crates while we eat. This way we dont get any begging or hair in our food. But usually just a go laydown will work. Also i taught my dogs to laydown when they want food.So when Im eating they are all laying down by my feet.I taught this by first telling them to down or lay and then giving them my food. Then they just figured out that they wont get any food until they are laying down.I dont even have to tell them.My vet also recommends people food.
Occasionally I'll add things like salmon, eggs or meat but only to his food and will not hand feed while I'm eating. As a result he does not beg from me...but...my husband ...will sometimes hand give Dexter food and as a result he sits in front of him, with a starved look of course, if my husband is eating. NOT a good habit to allow!
I never feed him directly from my plate. My parents dog begs whenever you eat anything and I think its rude and annoying. When I moved back to my parents with Merphy I demanded that my dad not give Merphy table scraps, even if that means that he gives Benji some and not Merphy. He refuses to listen to me, so now I have a beggar. It makes me so mad.
same thing happened to me heather so when my outside doggs come in they beg sometimes but just look at you they won't bark or cry. but i have to admite my fridge went out over the weekend so i cooked steak chicken and lots of shrimp and deer and yes it was rotton so it was gross to cook it but my big outside dogs just loved it and no they did not get sick.
I do not believe in people food for dogs unless it is vegs. with corn marg, raw vegs. or some fruit <never grapes or raisins> But David...::growls:: He sneaks them table food when he thinks I am not looking and I give him such a scolding it is embaressing, not that it stops him. I know he gives them tiny scraps now and then and I spit nails when I find out. I mean, I spend serious money on very good nutruous food for them and I will be derned if he is going to get my two spayed females fat on inappropriate food or my Winston <neutered> into a chunky monkey over this. Thats how I found out that beef fat gives Winston acne type pimple on his haunches, David gave him his leftover beef roast fat from his plate ::growls::
Gunny, what foods do you feed your dogs? Do you feed it in addition to dog food? How do you prepare it? In what quantities?
I ask because I was considering doing this, in light of all these dog food recalls and speculation on what dog food is good for dogs. I would think that feeding meats and veggies that are considered "people food" are safer, as we know what is "in it," minus chemicals and preservatives. Of course I expect that food given to dogs would be free of spices and seasonings
Do you know of a good website on this subject, with recommended diets for dogs?
i feed mine people food also. i also tend to feed a lot of it to them raw while i am cooking. they love raw chicken breast and raw ground beef ...... even the cat will get in on the action if there is raw chicken breast to be had =)
