Jimmy is not friendly with strangers or othrt dogs
he is a mini dachshund but thinks he is Nepolean

I need some help here. I have a mini dachshund 11 pounds ( little fellow)

Jimmy barks at strangers when I take him out for walk.
Today a lady said how cute the dog is and even before she finished the sentence he started barking at her. The lady said he is over protective of me

It happens all the time with strangers . I am very embarassed of his behaviour


what can I do


He is also not friendly with other dogs

Both me and the dog walker are his best best friends .When I take him to dog walk,other dogs are so so friendly and want to play with him, he does not like to play with any one except me. he is a saint to me but not to others

I asked other dachshind owners whether their dogs behave this way . many said their dogs are friendly
Only one person said his dachshund is protective of him

what I need to do
I want him to be friendly with other dogs . Most of the dogs in my neighborhood are friendly dogs inculding Pits

Take him to obedience classes.Is he aggressive with dogs or does he just not want to play??

If he sint aggressive take him ot a doggie daycare adn let him spend the day there.If all goes well do it for a week or every other day.You just pick him up at the end of the day.

Tell him No in a stern voice if he barks.If he doesnt stop carry a water gun with you and squirt him in the mouth tell him quiet!! Tell the people to come up and pet him anyway..is not his choice.

Als o do not carry him around.Let him walk around people.Give them a treat for him.Sometimes when you carry them they get too spoiled and get protective and lose their confidence.im not sure why but it does with certain dogs.So when your out and abotu make him walk on the leash.

I Had a dauschund growing up named fritz exactly this way and unfortunitley most of his life he atayed very protective the doxi I have now is not like this at all. I think some of it comes down to personality. But I think having treats for others to give him would help then maybe he would be wxcited to see new people but they really think they are big dogs!

Tks folks I am going to take him to obediance class

He is aggressive with every dog he sees including Pits
I noticed he is cool with other dachsunds

When They come near him, he comes towards me. he is obviously scared too

Hes definitaly a mama's boy!! LOL (no offense)

Where do you pla n on taking him for classes? I hope not petsmart as the trainers are not educated at all.I have watched a few classes and these dogs are insane.They will not be able to help you with dog aggression.

Once he started an yaggression what so ever he would get a quick pop with the leash and a very stern No.

if all else fails I use vinegar and squirt them when they focus too much or any aggression starts.it worksl ike magic.

Also keep in mind he is in his teen stage!! :) S ohe will do everything he thinks he can get away with.Soem dogs eevn regress in housebreaking

I am sure training will help him to be friendly with other dogs and humans

He is not that friendly with my wife either . He does not bark at her but ignores her completly

Sorr y he is a Dada's boy!!! Lol Im very sorry about that. **go hides in a corner**

Great pics.He may never really love your wife.He has bonded with YOU.If she really wnats him to love her,have her take him to obedince classes.I have seen many couples do that.Like one takes it to basic for teh 8 weeks and then one takes it to intermediate or advanced for 8 weeks.And it really works.If she really doesnt care dotn worry about it. You may also wnat to try havign her feed him one meal and you feed one meal.Let her get him out and paly with him without you there and let ehr take him out to go potty.he will still adore you but he will also love her alot more too.Just a suggestion

Jimmy is such a lovely doggie! Dachshunds are very much on the top of my favourites list! I know that trait - thinks he's Napoleon! My Dufus was just like that, although he was people-friendly.

I am learning more and more all the time-one thing I have learned is if a dog reacts that way to a well meaning stranger it is NOT being protective of it's owner.
The dog is simply lacking confidence in itself and barks at everyone, seeing a threat to it's own self where there is none.
A dog should react by staying by the owner and not growling and barking at a non threatening stranger. If the stranger is definitely threatening would be the only time a dog should act that way. NO growling is acceptable that is pure aggression. I do have one doxie who would never bite anyone, but she does not like to be approached by any stranger and will bark at everyone, not caring who it is, unless it is me, my hubby or our daughter. She is good with kids though. Her only fault is barking at everyone she sees. While she barks her tail wags crazily. lol

I think he does not have confidence

I am now taking him to the dog walk to socialize with other dogs atleast twice a day
He just had a good time with a Mutt in the dog park. The mut is a mix of lab and something

he did not play for a long time with the MUT may be only for 2 minutes and then he wanted to play with me. The owner of the mut said I should bring him there very often inorder for him to gain confidence he is lacking .

My friend had one that did the same thing and obdience classes really helped
