In August of 2004 I lost my shih tzu/poodle Bambi after 12 years, so in September of 2005 on petfinder I saw this ad for a female shih tzu/poodle 1 year old so I called the woman and that afternoon I had her in my home, to me and to the groomers she looks more' like a Bichon/poodle but anyways she's not a bad little dog but she does have her bad habits, such as stealing food and going to the bathroom where ever she feels like, she has even gone on top of the beds, she'll chew whatever might be left on the floor and now she has started snapping at me and the kids, she sleeps on top of my bed and sometimes I have to move her over at night, last week when I did this she growled at me and last night ahe snapped, it scares me alittle so I left her alone, I came close in November to giving her back to the woman that I got her from but then I felt bad because I would miss having another little dog around but now with the snapping I don't know what to do???? This is Mimi's 3rd home now I know why. Should I give her back?
dont give her back! Take her to obedience classes.I laso suggest you start watching the dog whisperer.ALL those things you said can be fixed.IM doing it with a Rottie now.If she is stealing food when you are eating put ehr in the crate when oyur egtting ready to eat.Housebreaking her is easy.Get a crate.Take her out every 2 hours.Feed her at the same times every day.Take her out 15 mintues after she eats and drinks.Dont give ehr free food or free water.she has 15 mintues to eat and drink if she doesnt.....well she has later that night. An adult dog will not starve its self. When you dont want her in the crate have her on a leash.Never let her off the leash. Those privledges are over now.Shut all your bedroom doors too just incase you forget to put her on the leash anad hold it.If you catch her making a mistake startle her with a pan or something loud and say no and flip her on ehr ack and take her outside. She is going to be treated like a puppy until she learns.
If I were you the other night she would have been in BIG doo doo with me.She would have got flipped on her back and growled out.But since you will always have a leash on her you can correct her with a leash.I would get a small prong collar for her size and correct her wiwth that. The prong collar works like a dog bite. Also when you are taking a toy or bone haev another toy or bone in front of ehr mouth so if she decides to bite when you are taking the toy from her mouth she will go after the other one you have in your hand. When she lets go of the other one let her have the one you were using as a sheild. Then when you take them away.Dont let her have them.If she eevn tries to reach for it say no.When she finally gives up and oyu cna lay it right on her foot and she looks the other way THEN she can have it.
Take her on daily walks! I mean a good walk.Dont let ehr walk in fornt of you.make her walk right beside you.Dont let her sniff where and when she wants to.You do it on YOUR terms. When walking in and out of doors make her come in after you. When she ever wnats anything attention, food, water, bones, toys, anything at all she must sit before she can get it what she wanted.
All these problems are easy and fixable.Tell me if i missed anything. If you watch the dog whisperer they had a lhasa apso that sounds kinda like your dog.he actually has had alot of small dominit dogs. The only problem is she thinks shes the alpha right now. Also dont let her on anyones bed, couch, chair or anyting she stays on the floor. She does what oyu wnat her to do the first time oyu ask,So if she doesnt than MAKE her do it.
Thank You for the advice I know I must sound like a big baby but to flip her on her back she would probably snap at me again, I will try those things that you said, I mean she's a calm dog and really cute but I will not put up with the snapping, I'm a 44 year old woman and here I am afraid to move her over at night in my bed, When I got Mimi my daughter Stephanie 21 said to me Mom remember she will never be Bambi and she was right.
You dont haev to flip her on her back.More than likely shes just bluffing you. With getting her out of the bed dont let her in there to ebgin with.Put her in a crate at night. That privledge does NOT exist anymore. With my Rottie his head is probably bigger than your dog!! LOl anyway if he doesnt something taken away he will snarl But i get him on a choker (only time I use one) and I hang his front feet off the ground for a fewseconds and that way I get the bone and I dont egt bit.Since she is going ot be on aleash for now on you cna just pull her right off the bed when you want.I have neevr seen a dog try to snap back when they are in that postition with them on their side.I just grab by the collar put on its sidePut a hand on the neck and one on the thigh then just growl right at her neck. Most dogs wont challenge because in a dog world if they do they will get killed. When your holding the neck also she can turn aroudn ot bite you.
Watch The dog whisperer it is awesome and oyu can use his techniques if you like them. The walk is so important.Im sorry abotu your loss and I hope these work.
Thanks again, I love dogs, I have 3, Mimi, Hailey (Golden) and Annie a yellow Lab and NEVER have they ever snapped at me. I feed all the stray cats and kittens outside my door, I would take some in but they run from me when I get close and I'm not even that ugly LOL!!!!! I do love the Goldens, Hailey is sooooo passive with Mimi and when they play Mimi bites her all over the place (Playing).......
If my dog snaped at me we'd be having a 'come to jesus' meeting.
KEep a leash (at least 6 foot in length) on the dog so you can force it to do what you want if necessary, without risking being bitten. Do not let her on ANY furniture, if she's guarding the furniture and snapping at you, she thinks she's the alpha in the family, ie, she ranks higher than you do. Obedience trianing as others have suggested will help. Having a leash on her when she gets on furniture or whatnot makes for easy yanking off. I'd also fill a water spray bottle with 1/4 vinegar and the rest water, keep it handy. It' works great for startling dogs out of bad behavior and I'd certainly use it as a correction for growling and snapping.
I will try that but I'll be dammed if she's gonna control me, also will will not sleep on my bed again. Also too when someone is eating I mean she is right there in your face and when I firmly tell her NO her upper lip goes up like she wants to bite, so now I put her in the room when we eat... If she ever snapped at my husband that's it for her.......
I just have a question that someone might now why I am in the Rhode Island area so I was just looking at the dogs wanted section and I came across this person in RI who is looking for all these different breeds to mate with, shih tzu, bichon, Yorkie, Min Pin etc.... what does this mean?
I this this might sound mean but I would keep her on a leash at all times and when shes not supervised put her in a crate. The crate can become "her den" and a place for her to feel safe.Shes probally under allot of stress too. She may be snapping because shes trying to be the boss of her new home and is trying to set "her" rules. So let her know your the boss and keep her at command untill you feel she knows her place in the pack. But under no conditions should you allow her to bite your children. Make the children aware that she will bite and teach them to respect her and handle her in the proper way. Always remember its hard to replace a deceased pet, the new dog wont be her clone and will be her own personality once you show her the rules of your home she should settle into a beloved member of your family.
Thank You, I will try all of your tips, I like Mimi and that's why she is still with me, but You know I treat her like gold, I buy her the best food, toys etc... i just want her to show me love in return which she does at times and then she turns around and snaps (Don't get it)
It's funny because I kept Bambi's bed in the kitchen and Mimi sleeps in her bed at times, Bambi is now on my mantle above the fire place and been 16 months that Bambi is gone but it still feels like yesterday. Bambi was born September 12th and Mimi's Birthday is september 13th how weird is that!!!!!!
It probally means they want a pure breed dog for profit. Call and ask if they want spayed animals and I bet thier reply will be no. Of course they may be used as lab experiments so if considering the article then go have alooksee for your self. I dont trust ads.
