stitches mom the pom had to have a c-section it was her first litter and it was with 4 pup the other three died...sniff..sniff...is it common for a bitch just to not be able to give birth or do you think the litter was to bis she is only 6.70 lbs just wondering?
Well when i'm not driving a school bus, I am also a surgical tech. Once a C sec always a c-sec...not true in humans anymore but I'm not sure about dogs. In this case due to such a small dog, quite possibly. You may want to find some Pom breeders and ask their opinions. I have Dobes and my bitch cranked 'em out with no problems. Hope your bitch is ok and good luck! PS when school is out I will probably go back to surgery full time. I live out in the country and there aren't many hospitals around. May have to move....
well it is my moms in laws bitch she is fine thank goodness but i am doing all this research just to stud mine but i want to learn as much as i can about everything does anyone know if that is a normal size little for a 7 pound pom?
On a small toy breed bitch I would say the chances of subsequent C-sections are high. However on our beagles I've have many that have whelped naturally after a C-section. I would definately depend on the reason for the section. Its very possible though that she may whelp on her own the next time.
my MIL just corrected me she said she took her to the vet and vet did it so she won't go into labor after hours so it will be cheaper have you ever heard of that i think its a bit wierd to me. well i have got into it with her vet before i personally do not like him.
Occasionally its wise to section a bitch if you know already she will not freewhelp. I would NEVER do it though until she had already had a temperature drop and was definately in labor. Usually once they go into early labor you have from 6-12 hours so, you don't necessarily have to do an emergency C-setion. This is where experience comes into play. As I always say: Breeding dogs is definately NOT for sissies! LOL
Shes a good size pom. I have two poms who are 4 lbs and whelped just fine. I think it was premature of your MIL to do a c-section just to save $ "just in case". A c-section can cause alot of other complications both medically and physically. The bitch may have a hard time accepting the puppies and she may have a longer wait before her milk comes in..both must be tended to carefully. I hope the momma and pups are doing well. Keep us posted..
luvmydane......once a c-section......always? Not necesarrily, it is really based on the reason for the section. Some reasons include....one or two pup litters, pups get too big for mom to pass.......pup is turned sideways...will not necesarrily happen again next time....mom is simply not large enough or built internally properly to free whelp....some lines are just prone to producing larger pups. If she decided to ever breed her again, and it reults in another section, I would consider spaying her.
Though personal note...I just read where it was a planned section! I'll leave the info there anyway, lol
