I read an article in the paper today(in england) about a man who lives on roadkill animals. He hasn't bought any meat for at least 20 years. He just goes around and scraps up any dead animals he finds on the road. These include squirrels, rabbits, badgers, deer but the worst is cats and even dogs. He thinks it is quite normal to do this. I think it is Sick What do you all think.
Well heck he could have had some good eating here last week when a deer ran into my car. 6:45 am driving me and daughter into work and I see it. She is screaming I am slamming on breakss and bammmmmmm. I slowed enought for it to hit my front quarter panel and not come up through windshield thankfully as just had an officer killed from that not long ago.
Actually I made my way home and dh then drove daughter to work while I took day off and within those 10 minutes it was loaded in someones vehicle.
He must find fresh kill as they have to be gutted within so many minutes ( not sure of time) or it will poisen the meat.
Still scared to drive to work now I go real slow and watch constantly now.
I agree with jj on this one..I had 2 deer with in 6 days run into the side of my van a few years ago...i was able to find one..and i had him processed...better then letting him lay on the road and waste...I dont know about the other things..and the thought of "scraping them off the road" that conjures up visions im not really into...but..a fresh kill will be ok..as long as you dress it..and dont damage the bladder or intestines on the meat...time is of the essence..and it is better in colder climates of corse...i personlly dont like the thoughts of animals dying for no purpose..so..if he eats them..great..he must have the clearest stretch of road around..
Sorry cockerlover. Didn't mean to put you off your food. But it is gross isn't it. I was thinking the same thing about the germs and bacteria, so he must have to get them quite fresh. How disgusting. Another thing he eats is hedgehogs and rats. Can you imagine the disease. He says that his speciality is Badger stew!!! I would hate to think if one of my animals was killed by a car that someone had scraped them up and made them into a pie.
Huron, I can understand the deer and larger animals like that, but i think that what makes me feel a bit ill is the domestic animals.I am a meat eater so its not thst i have a problem with that. I think it was the scraping them off the road bit that turned my stomach.

I can't imagine. I can't believe I'm saying this... if it just happened I could maybe see, if someone were desperate enough, to maybe pick it up, clean, & roast it. I could never though. I'm surprised he didn't get sick.
When I visited Alaska I was happy to find out that when a moose would be hit that they would notify the local churchs. They would come out and pick up the animal and clean it and give the meat to the needy.
Hmm, I always wondered what happened to all the dead animals in our neighborhood. He have wild rabbits, possums and squirrels like crazy (the rabbits are the worst). If you have ever seen those commercials for Mercury Insurance where the squirrels run out in front of the car to cause an accident, and then give fives to each other when they are successful...that is what the rabbits are like here. I know I've hit a few rabbits and I always see new dead rabbits, some squirrels and an occasional possum, but I never see animals that have been dead for a while. I know the county doesn't come check for dead animals in our neighborhood, so someone must be getting some free dinners around here.
That is gross. When I was little, my grandma used to take me to this little grocery store that was in her complex (it was a senior citizen condo place). Anytime an old lady was buying cat food, she would whisper to me that the lady was not buying it for her cat, but she was buying it for her to eat. Then in high school, there was a teacher that looked like a cat, and the classroom always smelled like cat food. Made me wonder!
here if you kill a deer and get an officer to give you a tag for it you can take it with you and have it butchered up to eat...... but eating any ol roadkill that is just gross .... i used to do animal control and part of my job was scraping animals off the road if someone complained .... ick is all i can say .....blechk......
LOL LuvsTalMen, I used to work as a claims adjuster for an insurance company. Those were some expensive claims for the insurance company too! I originally started in subrogation, which is where we go after the at fault party or their insurance company to repay the claim. I got so many deer claims on my desk...I wasn't sure who to go after, as I don't think deer carry checkbooks!
