We have a 4 year old cat Moe. He is an awesom cat but he his huuuuuuge. I think he is about 14 pounds. Any way......We normally leave a bowl of food out for him, keeping it filled when ever it gets low. I was wondering if it is better off to feed him smaller portions twice a day. I am guessing, but though 1/2 cup two times per day. One in the morning and one in the evening. Can someone share???????/
That is a great way to fatten up your cat!! :) Dependng on the food, you will have to feed around a cup of food a day. Yuo sound like you're aiming right. Feed for the weight you WANT the kitty to be not the weight it already IS. I have a cat who's twelve punds and growing and I feed her a cup a day, so I can feel what you're going through. And be sure to feed a high quality food.
The problem with free feeding pets is that you don't have any idea how much they are really eating. For example, how much food would you say he eats a day as it is? Before you start your cat on a diet, take it to the vet and make sure it's healthy, and ask for suggestions on what to cut the food back to. I'd say half a cup 2x a day is lot for a 14 lb cat. I'm not sure if Arwenfaith or the other poster understood, but as I read it, you think your cat is too fat and you want him to loose weight, not gain it. Being overweight is unhealthy for both pets and humans. The obnoxious part about fat cats is they are extremely vocal if they dont get their food when they want it, so be prepared for yowling that will make you think you are starving your pet.
My cat had the same problem. I would free feed him and he got really fat, so I knew he needed to loose weight. The first thing I did was stop free feeding, at first he hated it he would cry all night for food and then again early in the morning. I also changed his food to am all natural food with less fillers. The main ingredients are meat , not corn meal. I think he lost most of his weight from the food. He get s about 3/4 cup a day. He has lost a lot of weight and seems to want to be more active now.
My cats were fat..although one has greatly improved. I've never free fed them so I have no idea why they plumped up, but I put them on Prescription Diet R/D (I have to buy it at the vets office). My male went from 17lbs to 14! (he's not fat now, he's just a large boy). My girl only lost a few grams but at least she is no longer gaining..which is the best we can hope for I suppose. She's chubby. lol Talk to your vet about diet foods, and I would lay off the free feeding.
I had a "fat" cat she was around 20 LBS no lie. We only fed her 2 times a day but that didn't stop her she would just go outside and catch her own food. one way to get a cat to loose weight would be to get some cat toys and play with them. I taught all my cats to play fetch just like a dog, get a ball with cat nip inside it, or if all else fails walk your cat. I noticed with my cats the more toys they had the more they played and the more they lost weight. But the older they are the less they play and the fatter they get. But i love fat cats. my fat cat was the best i had i had her put to sleep due to cancer when she was 19yrs old.
I have a cat named Charlie and he weighs 21lbs. The vet said I had to put him on a diet, so I cut back on his food and put him on a diet food. Well it did no good because Charlie will steal food if he doesnt have it. He will get in my cabinets and eat what ever he can find. He will chew through the wrappers of bread, crackers, ramen noodles, cookies, cereal or whatever else he can find. He is 6 years old. I gave up and have him on a self feeder. Since I have gotten my other cats he plays more and hasnt gain anymore weight. The last time I took him to the vet I had him in a carrier and one of my Rottweilers when they were a puppy and the vet said "god the cat is bigger then the puppy". The Vet said as long as he doesn't gain anymore weight or start having any other problems then he will be fine
LOL My cat would do the same thing!!!! If you left butter on the counter you can count on it being gone if she was in the house. If you left your plate on the table she would jump up there and start eating your food. LOL i thought my cat was the only one that would do such things.
i had the same problem with my 2 cats also. i was free feeding them 1 cup a day between the two of them and i couldn't ubnderstand why they kept gaining weight. i then found out that my husband and son were putting food in their bowl anytime they saw it low. so now i am the only one who feeds them and they are back to getting only the one cup of food to share and they have gotten back down to what they were. they are by no means skinny now fox weighs 13 lbs and scully weighs around 12. i free feed everyone in the house as they are all grazers. i can't get any of them to eat all at once.
