I have 2 min. schnauzers one is an angel (Sasha) she is 2 - never had hardly any problems with her. Now we have a devil in angel skin (Zoey) she is 8 months old for some reason Zoey shreds pee - pads . But only when we are gone. I lock her and Sasha up in our sunroom when we leave everything is in there heat in the winter a/c in the summer couch & chairs their beds, food and water and a pee-pad. and a whole basket full of toys. I thought it was because she was bored so I put all the toys in there with only a few out in the rest of the house. Well that may be part of it but she destroys those pee pads and then when it is in shreds all over the place I swear they roll in it and I come home to a huge mess. Any one got any ideas why Zoey does this - I am not 100% sure Sasha is not helping Zoey but She never tore them up before. Any suggestions? I am about ready to stop putting them out but I know sasha will and does use them - oh yea if it is not torn up then it is peed on- so if i quit putting them out then there is no place to pee but if I leave them out i am risking having to clean up a horrible mess. HELP!!!
Ours never get into anything, except if there are kleenixs in the wastebasket in one of the bathrooms, Tina will shread them when we leave. I think she just plain throws alittle tantrum. If they are empty(which I make sure they are) everything is fine. I really don't know what you would do about the little peepee pads. If you had a doggie door and didn't have to use them that might be the answer. They really learn fast from each other. Tina also pulls and bites my purse when I start to leave and now Max has tried this. At 12yrs. old????? Can you believe? Its like he's going through his second puppyhood.
I do agree that crating could be the answer but I am hoping that this is a stage --- Zoey is a rescue - she spent the first 6 months in a crate 18 - 20 hours a day we have only had her amost 2months so I a hoping she will grow out of it. Maybe she is just mad? For us leaving her but heck I am leaving her and Sasha in a 15x20 room that is very nice nothing like the barely 2x4ft she lived in for so long. So who knows I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed... thanks for all ideas..
I laughed when I read this because it sounds like my Lacie. She is a schnauzer too. She would do that when I would leave. One time I spied on her and watched what she did when I left and she would run back and forth down my hallway and back and then go get anything paper and shred it into a million peices. She was having a tantrum. One day when I was on a cruise and she was with my kids and mom, she shredden one of my rugs. That went on a few more times and when we came home we would see peices of yarn from the rug and she had that guilty sorry look. We would show her the mess and tell her no no. They know what they are doing. Needless to say she is better now. We kept one of her pups and she is happy. You said yours was crated alot in the beginnig of her life, well that is maybe her security. She may need that when you are gone. Hang in there, she is just a pup.
This is probly a touch of separation anxiety. The pad shredding is her way of dealing with the stress. Provideing toys for a dog, when your not there to play with doesn't work for most dogs. You have to provide things like bones to chew, kong or bones stuffed with goodies. Freezing them can also make them last longer. Such as a kong filled with wet food for example and freeze it. You should be offering this on a daily basis to make the dog fixate on the chewing fun.
