With horses, you de-worm them every so many weeks to prevent worms, and you buy the de-wormer at any local feed store. Is there something similar for dogs? i know they dont' need it as often and I know if they get worms the vet can perscribe de-wormer, but is there a product you can purchase to prevent them from getting worms?
There are different types of dogs wormers. One is for hookworm, whipworm, roundworm. This is the one used to deworm puppies, and is also used to treat the adults. This consists of brands such as Nemex, Evict, and other names made by different company's. The vet can do a fecal test to confirm the presence of the worms. Some breeders chosse to worm with this on a routine basis on all their dogs.
There is also a seperate medicine for tapeworm. This type of worm has its own med and will not be effected by the other medicine. Tapeworm is something you do not want to treat for unless you have confirmed they have them. You dont treat routinely with this. This is also confirmes by a fecal test or by seeing them yourself in the stool.
Which one...the Nemex types for round, hook, whip, etc? As puppies , lactating moms at 2-3 weeks after giving birth. The comapny reccomends you have the dogs feces tested to confirm the presence of the worms before giving. Dog in heavily contaminated quarters can be done monthly. In general most do the routine admin every 6 months or yearly. Not sure what the others do here....maybe they will post.
It's important to say that if you are treating your dog monthly for heartworms using Interceptor, you are already giving yoru dog a monthly wormer. Interceptor kills and prevents hookworms, whipworms and roundworms as well as heartworms.
If you're using heartguard, the ivermectin that is the active ingredient works to prevent hookworms and roundworms as well as heartworms.
I live in Australia, and I find that the worm tablets from the vet seem to cover a broader variety of worms than the one's from the supermarket or pet food stores. You generally get what you pay for with worm tablets. It's best to worm about 3 months. Don't forget to worm all of your pets regularly and most importantly, DON'T FORGET TO WORM YOURSELF once in a while!
